ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan rowing program hosted Eastern Michigan in a four-piece set scrimmage on Sunday (Sept. 17), going head-to-head with the Eagles on the waters of Belleville Lake.
Having only been in classes since Tuesday, Sept. 5, the Maize and Blue were looking to make today's races a collective rust-buster, providing a chance to get back on the water in a competitive atmosphere.
Sunday's event marked an early-season evaluation opportunity for the staff as well as a chance for the new lineups to gain racing experience together for the first time this season. Four separate eight boats competed in 3,000-meter races, with U-M finishing one-two-three in all four sets.
The first place-finishing boat was coxed by Alexis Jones in the first two pieces and Jillian Zull in the later pieces, with Meghan Gutknecht in stroke seat during all four pieces. That boat timed 11:03.2 in its fastest piece of the day and 11:09.0 in the second-morning piece.
"Getting on the water in a competitive atmosphere was a good experience for several of our younger athletes today," said head coach Mark Rothstein. "We feel we have plenty of clay to work with on this team, and now we need to work together to mold the right sculpture by next May."
U-M is back on the water in two weekends, racing Ohio State at Belleville Lake on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m.
