MADISON, Wis. -- After the University of Michigan women's golf team opened with a 301 first-round total at the East & West Match Play Challenge today (Sunday, Sept. 17), senior Emily White rallied the Maize and Blue with a 69 (-3) in the second round and guided U-M to a 290 and 36-hole total of 591 in stroke play qualifying at Wisconsin's University Ridge Golf Course.
Despite the rally, U-M closed the day fifth among the eight-team field and will play in consolation match play bracket against Oregon State on Monday (Sept. 18) at 9 a.m. CDT off the 10th tee.
"We had a nice comeback after our opening 18 holes," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "We were a bit rusty, particularly on the greens, in that first 18, but finally got a hang of the green speed. I'm really looking forward to match play tomorrow. It's incredibly competitive and we are getting some great experience under our belts."
Even with the first-round low of 74 from junior Elodie Van Dievoet, the Wolverines found themselves in the eighth position after the opening 18 holes. With no time to rest in between the round, White took charge for U-M in the day's second 18 as birdies on Nos. 2, 11 and 16 along with 15 pars helped her posted her third career sub-70 round with a 69. Combining that tally with her opening 75, White finished the day even at 144, tying her for seventh.
"Emily has been very diligent all summer long and really had some steady rounds heading into this week," said Dowling. "Her approach to the game has become very even-keeled -- nothing seems to rattle her. Today's play, and in particular her second round, was just awesome, and we needed it."
With Van Dievoet and freshman Ashley Kim adding a pair of 73s, the Maize and Blue rally shaved 11 shots from the morning tally and vaulted three positions to fifth with the 591 total, six shots away from the top four and the championships bracket.
Following White's top-10 finish, Van Dievoet made it five straight stroke-play events finishing among the top 20 as she tied for 15th at 147 (74-73), while Kim's first collegiate start and tournament yielded a total of 149 (76-73) and tie for 21st. Round out U-M's starting five, senior Megan Kim tied for 32nd at 152 (76-76), while sophomore Alisa Snyder tied for 36th at 154 (79-75).
Senior Kathy Lim earned the second seed in the individual match play bracket after rounds of 76 and 75 gave her a 151 stroke play total. After winning the individual bracket in the 2015 East & West event at University Ridge, she is back in the championship bracket and will take on UC Davis' Hannah Suh.
