TOLEDO, Ohio -- After rains and lightning forced the cancellation of the final round today (Tuesday, Sept. 19), the University of Michigan men's golf team opened the 2017-18 campaign with a tie for third place with a 565 (-3) team total at Toledo's Inverness Intercollegiate held at the Inverness Club. U-M posted team tallies of 285 (+1) and 280 (-4) -- the second-lowest of the round -- and shared the third position with UCLA (282-285).
The Wolverines, who produced team tallies of 285 (+1) and 280 (-4) during Monday's 36-hole day, were led by their upperclassman duo of senior Kyle Mueller and junior Nick Carlson, who both posted top-10 individual finishes.
Mueller placed third in the 87-player field with a 135 (-7) two-round tally. After opening with a 68 (-3) he followed with a 67 (-4) in a bogey-free second round. He recorded just one bogey in 36 holes as he had eight birdies and 27 pars during the event.
Carlson tied for sixth with a 138 (-4) after he opened with a 67 (-4) and followed with an even-par 71. He posted the second-most birdies in the field with 10.
"Even though today's round was rained out, I thought our 36 holes yesterday was a good introduction to the season, especially for our new players," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "I was excited to see the guys in competition again to get a better feel for this year's team. Obviously, Kyle and Nick led us again. They both feel really confident with their games and played well."
Following Mueller and Carlson, senior Ian Kim battled through a sore wrist to tie for 35th at 145 (74-71). Freshmen Connor Prassas (78-71) and Charlie Pilon (76-75) were each in the lineup for their inaugural collegiate event and tied for 62nd and 69th, respectively.
Playing as an individual, U-M's third freshman, Henry Spring, made his debut and tied for 54th at 148 (72-76). Sophomore Taisei Negishi also opened the season as an individual and tied for 79th (74-79/153).
"I was really impressed with all three freshmen as well," said Whitten. "They have played in some big tournaments before coming to Michigan, and I think that experience served all of them well. They are mature guys, and I love their decision-making and composure on the course. They will only get better."
The season will continue this weekend as the Wolverines travel to Sugar Grove, Illinois, for the Northern Intercollegiate on Sunday and Monday (Sept. 25-26). Northern Illinois will host the event at Rich Harvest Farms, site of the 2017 NCAA Finals.
"The guys will be especially excited to tee it up at Rich Harvest Farms since we did not get a chance to compete in this final round," added Whitten.
