MADISON, Wis. -- With the deciding match coming down to its final hole, the University of Michigan women's golf team dropped a 3-2 decision to sixth-seeded Nebraska today (Tuesday, Sept. 19) to finish eighth at the East & West Match Play Challenge played at Wisconsin's University Ridge Golf Course.
"We definitely have some positives to take away from our first tournament," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "We had the second-lowest stroke play round in the afternoon on Sunday and both our matches were close and came down to the final holes. We had some really nice stretches of golf. However, the bottom line is that we got outplayed in both matches. We have some work to do, and I am excited to get back to work before heading to Vail next week."
With the seventh-place match knotted at 2-2, U-M's fate lay in the hands of senior Elodie Van Dievoet in her battle with the Cornhuskers' Audrey Judd. Starting off the 10th tee, the pairing split two holes apiece before a missed putt on the ninth gave Judd a 1-up lead heading to the front side.
Just as Van Dievoet squared the match by taking the first hole, Judd answered on No. 2 and then took the fourth hole to go 2 up. Wins on Nos. 5 and 7 helped Van Dievoet square the match again, and the duo headed to the final hole. With their approaches to the green, Van Dievoet found herself 12 feet away, while Judd was about six feet away. After Van Dievoet just missed her birdie putt and tapped in for par, Judd made her putt to take the final hole and win the match for the Cornhuskers, 3-2.
Seniors Emily White and Megan Kim rebounded from losses in the consolation semifinal yesterday to notch U-M's wins today. White won the final two holes for a 3-and-1 decision over Noor Ahmed, while Kim earned a 3-and-2 decision over Haley Thiele.
In the individual bracket, senior Kathy Lim battled with Oregon State's Mari Nishiura for the individual title. After Nishiura won the first hole, Lim answered on the par-3 third with a birdie and followed with another birdie the front's second par 3, the fifth hole, to take a 1-up lead. However, Nishiura rebounded with wins on Nos. 5 and 8 to make the turn 1 up.
A third birdie of the round by Lim squared the match on the 12th, but Nishiura answered on the 13th to reclaim the lead. Heading into the final three holes, Lim took the 16th but missed her birdie attempted on the 17th, giving way to Nishiura as she won the hole and then held on for the 1-up victory.
The Wolverines will get little rest as they leave this weekend for Golfweek's Conference Challenge, Monday through Wednesday (Sept. 25-27) at Red Sky Golf Club in Vail, Colorado.
