ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team, led by a brace from junior Reilly Martin, drew with Iowa, 2-2, on Friday (Sept. 29) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines (5-2-5, 2-1-2 Big Ten) got on the board with the first shot of the contest for either side in the 18th minute. Freshman Sarah Stratigakis shook a pair of defenders on the left touch line and sent an inch-perfect service to the top of the six that found a streaking Martin, who finished lower right to give Michigan the early 1-0 advantage.
Following the break, Martin nearly doubled the Wolverines pleasure in the 52nd minute. After earning a foul on the top right corner of the 18, she bent the set-piece strike around the Iowa wall that seemed destined for goal, but sailed just high of the cross bar.
The Hawkeyes (5-4-1, 0-2-1 Big Ten) equalized in the 59th minute of play, a result of outshooting the Wolverines, 4-2, in the opening 14 minutes of the half. Leah Moss sent in a lefty service from the left wing that was headed home by Kaleigh Haus.
Less than three minutes later, Martin answered with her second goal of the night. After receiving a simple ball from freshman Lauren Long on the left flank, the junior turned and tucked her effort from 30 yards out under the crossbar to give U-M the 2-1 lead.
Iowa equalized with just over seven minutes to go as Devin Burns took a ball from Hannah Drkulec. The service, sent in from the right wing, found the back of the Wolverine net to knot the match at 2-2.
The best chance in the extra session came from Iowa on a shot with 4:15 to go in the second overtime, but U-M senior goalkeeper Sarah Jackson was up for the task. Her acrobatic stop on the effort from 18-yards out kept the match even at 2-2.
Michigan will remain at home to host Nebraska on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. Select Wolverines will be available for autographs following Sunday's match.
