COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- University of Michigan men's swimmers PJ Ransford and Charlie Swanson were named to the 2017-18 USA Swimming National Team, the governing body announced recently.
Additionally, head coach Mike Bottom and associate head coaches Dr. Josh White and Rick Bishop have all been named 2017-18 National Team coaches.
The 2017-18 USA Swimming National Team features the top six athletes in each individual Olympic event from the combined results of the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships, 2017 FINA World Championships, 2017 World University Games and the 2017 U.S. Open.
Ransford, a senior, was named to the team for the second consecutive year in the 1,500-meter freestyle. His time of 15:01.82 from June's Phillips 66 National Championships ranked fourth in the country for the 2016-17 year. Ransford is one of the top student-athletes in all of college swimming; last year as a junior, he received the NCAA Elite 90 Award, given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the NCAA Championships, and was an All-American in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
Swanson, a sophomore, was elevated to the National Team after spending the last two years on the U.S. Junior National Team. He made the team in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:15.99 from the U.S. Open in August, a time that ranked fifth in the country. Swanson won the Big Ten title in the 400-yard IM last year as a freshman.
Joining Ransford and Swanson on the National Team are U-M women's swimmers Vanessa Krause, Sierra Schmidt and Miranda Tucker as well as alumna Ali DeLoof (2013-16).
