COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team won nine events to defeat No. 11 Ohio State (176-124), No. 24 Virginia Tech (224-76) and Rutgers (233-67) on Saturday (Jan. 20) inside the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
"When we talked this morning at breakfast, our goal for the team was to get used to this pool and make it their own knowing we'd be back two more times for major meets," said head coach Mike Bottom. "We took this as an opportunity to get familiar with the pool, and also to feel good about it all. The team felt great about this meet and that bodes well for us as we move closer to Big Tens."
The Wolverines picked up where they left off last week, completely dominating the mid-distance and distance freestyle events. Junior Yirong Bi won both the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.09) and 1,000-yard freestyle (9:43.86), followed in each race by freshman Sierra Schmidt and senior G Ryan. Senior Gabby DeLoof took the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.81), as she was followed by Bi -- who just finished the 1,000 a half-hour earlier -- and junior Siobhán Haughey, who returned to action after missing last week's win over Indiana.
Michigan went 1-2-3 in one other event on Saturday. Senior Emily Kopas claimed the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.96), followed by sophomore Miranda Tucker and junior Jamie Yeung.
Senior Clara Smiddy was sharp once again, winning the 200-yard backstroke by almost two seconds (1:55.81) and out-touching Ohio State's Meg Bailey by .06 seconds in the 200-yard IM (2:00.60). Sophomore Vanessa Krause also picked up a pair of victories, holding off late charges from Ohio State swimmers in both the 100-yard butterfly (54.20) and 200-yard butterfly (1:57.22). The ninth victory came in the 400-yard freestyle relay which closed the meet, as the foursome of DeLoof, junior Catie DeLoof, Bi and freshman Daria Pyshnenko touched collectively at 3:16.77.
Pyshnenko had another strong swim in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing second in 22.68, nearly two-tenths faster than last week. Gabby DeLoof was second in the 100-yard freestyle (49.10), as she fell to Ohio State's Liz Li by the slimmest .01-second margin. Other individual runner-up finishes came from junior Taylor Garcia in the 100-yard backstroke (54.10) and Tucker in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.10).
In the diving well, freshman Christy Cutshaw had a team-high finish on platform, finishing fourth (236.33). Freshman Nikki Canale was fifth on one-meter (257.48).
The Wolverines will return to action on Friday, Feb. 2, when they host Michigan State on Senior Night at Canham Natatorium. The meet will begin at 5:30 p.m. Following the dual, several of the program's past Olympians will be honored during the second intermission of the ice hockey game vs. Wisconsin, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.
