WOLVERINE BITES
• Michigan shares the third spot in the Big Ten standings -- with Iowa -- with a 4-1 conference record. Ohio State and Penn State remain unbeaten, with each handing Michigan and Iowa its Big Ten loss.
• Freshman Drew Mattin earned the biggest win of his young career in his last outing, rallying to earn a 4-2 tiebreaker win against Minnesota's fourth-ranked Ethan Lizak -- last season's NCAA runner-up -- last Sunday (Jan. 21). Mattin evened the score with a takedown at the third-period buzzer and added another after choosing neutral in the tiebreaker. Mattin flipped a 9-0 loss to Lizak at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Dec. 1-2). It was his fourth win over an All-American this season.
• Senior/junior Malik Amine made his rankings debut at 149 pounds, listing 19th in the InterMat poll, after a pair of weekend wins, including a 6-4 decision over Minnesota's Steve Bleise. Amine, who lost to Bleise, 7-4, at the Midlands Championships last month, broke the match open with a four-point cradle in the third period. Amine is 12-7 on the season.
• Junior/sophomore Stevan Micic has claimed bonus points in each of his last seven matches -- since taking fifth place at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational -- with a fall, two technical falls and four major decisions over the stretch. Micic pinned Minnesota's 12th-ranked Mitch McKee (4:13) in his most recent outing. It was his first fall of the season and second in as many matches against McKee.
• Fifth-year senior Domenic Abounader and graduate student Adam Coon have also piled on the bonus points of late with six bonus wins over their last seven matches. Abounader outscored his weekend oppositions, 28-2, including a 14-1 major decision against Wisconsin's ninth-ranked Ricky Robertson. He has won four of his last seven matches by tech fall. Coon boasts three falls, a tech fall and two major decisions over the same stretch.
• Micic, Abounader, Coon and junior/sophomore Logan Massa have all earned bonus points in 70 percent -- or better -- of their season wins. Massa, who has missed time and struggled a bit since suffering an injury at the CKLV Invitational, leads the pack with bonus in eight of his nine wins (88.9%). Micic has earned bonus in 84.6 percent (11/13), Abounader in 80 percent (12/15) and Coon in 72 percent (13/18).
• Coon improved to 18-0 on the season with a pair of weekend wins. Micic and Coon remain the Wolverines' lone undefeated wrestlers in dual-meet action this season. Coon owns a perfect 9-0 dual mark, while Micic is 8-0; he missed the Lehigh dual with an injury.
• Coon used a 21-6 technical fall over Indiana's Fletcher Miller to secure his 100th career win in his first bout of the calendar year (Jan. 7). Coon, who has improved to 105-13 over his four competitive seasons, is the 36th Wolverine wrestler to achieve the feat in program history. Abounader is the next-closest Wolverine to the 100-win plateau with a career 84-26 record over his five seasons at Michigan.
• Michigan bookended the holiday break with dominant shutout wins against Oregon State (48-0) and Indiana (43-0) -- the latter being U-M's first shutout of a Big Ten opponent since a similar 39-0 win over Indiana in 1974. The last time Michigan boasted multiple shutouts in a season was 2000-01 when it blanked four opponents, including three in a row.
