U-M Takes Down South Carolina in Day One of ITA Kick-Off

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team defeated No. 20 South Carolina, 4-0, on the first day of the ITA Kick-Off being hosted at the University of North Carolina. With the victory, the Wolverines will take on host No. 3-ranked UNC tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 28) at 1 p.m. with a trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on the line.
Michigan took the doubles point after wins at Nos. 2 and 3. The combination of sophomore Connor Johnston and junior Myles Schalet made quick work at No. 2 with a 6-0 triumph, while freshman brothers Mattias Siimar and Kristofer Siimar clinched the first point of the match with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Senior Davis Crocker earned U-M's second point of the morning with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6, while Schalet earned his third straight win in dual-match singles play with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 4.
The Maize and Blue secured the win with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 by senior Runhao Hua and advanced to the final match against the No. 3-ranked Tar Heels.
Michigan will be in search of its first trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship since the 2008-09 season. The 2018 tournament will be hosted by the University of Washington at Seattle Tennis Club (Feb. 16-19).
