ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 20 University of Michigan ice hockey team (12-12-2, 7-9-2-1 B1G) is set to face off with No. 18 Wisconsin (13-12-3, 7-8-2-1 B1G) at Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena this weekend Friday and Saturday (Feb. 2-3).
The Wisconsin Series
Michigan and Wisconsin meet for the 142nd time in program history, with U-M holding a 72-58-11 record in the series. The two teams first met in Jan. 1923, as Michigan beat the Badgers, 2-1, in a double-overtime victory. The Wolverines hold a 37-15-7 home record against the Badgers.
Michigan and Wisconsin played to a 4-4 tie in the last meeting between these two squads earlier this season in Madison. The Maize and Blue was able to pick up the extra point in the Big Ten standings in that game with a shootout victory, redeeming themselves from a 7-3 loss the previous night.
Scouting the Badgers
Wisconsin is led by head coach Tony Granato, who is in his second season behind the bench for his alma mater. He led Wisconsin to a 20-15-1 (12-8-0 Big Ten) record in his first season as head coach after the Badgers won just 12 of 70 games the prior two seasons. The Badgers finished second in the conference standings last season and lost in overtime of the Big Ten Tournament championship game to Penn State. Wisconsin has gone 4-4-1 on the road so far this season.
Coming into this weekend against the Wolverines, the Badgers are unbeaten in their last three contests. Wisconsin defeated Notre Dame, then followed with a victory and tie against Penn State.
The Badgers were picked to finish third in the 2017-18 Big Ten Preseason Poll. Wisconsin had three players selected to the 2017-18 Big Ten Preseason Watch List, including sophomore forward Trent Fredric, graduate transfer goaltender Kyle Hayton and senior forward Cameron Hughes. Frederic, the 29th overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, was a unanimous selection to the Watch List.
Wisconsin currently trails Notre Dame and Ohio State in the Big Ten at third, with Michigan just behind in fourth.
Leading Wisconsin
Wisconsin is led by senior forward Ryan Wagner, who has accumulated 26 points (10 goals, 16 assists) through 29 games this season. Freshman defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk leads the team in assists with 18. Sophomore forward Trent Frederic leads the Badgers in goals with 12 on the season.
In net, graduate student Kyle Hayton has played in 22 games, totaling 1,233 minutes for Wisconsin. He has allowed 57 goals, for an average of 2.77 per game and has turned away 490 shots for a .896 save percentage. Hayton owns a record of 8-9-3. In addition, sophomore Jack Berry has played in 10 games, starting nine of them, while allowing 21 goals for a 2.46 average. He has a record of 5-3-1.
Recapping Columbus
Last weekend the Wolverines traveled to Columbus, Ohio, and could not avoid a Buckeye sweep, dropping Friday's game, 4-0, and Saturday's game, 5-3.
On Friday, despite outshooting the Buckeyes, 32-20, the Wolverines did not have an answer for OSU and were unable to find the back of the net.
Michigan had more luck scoring in the second contest, scoring three goals. The Wolverines struck first on a goal from Jack Becker, but after going back-and-forth with tallies, OSU went on to score the next three goals. Jake Slaker added a late goal for U-M, making the final score, 5-3.
Hayden Heatin' Up
Sophomore goaltender Hayden Lavigne has played in 19 games this season, surpassing the total of 13 from his freshman campaign. He holds an 8-8-2 record for the season. His two goals allowed during U-M's sweep of Penn State and 77 saves over the weekend series earned him the Big Ten's First Star of the Week Award on Jan.19.
Hobey Hopefuls
Tony Calderone and Cooper Marody have both been nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to college hockey's top player. Michigan has had two Hobey Baker winners in its history, with Brendan Morrison winning in 1997 and Kevin Porter in 2008.
Run DMC
Michigan's "DMC" line of Dexter Dancs, Cooper Marody and Tony Calderone have combined for 76 of the Wolverines' 218 points (34.9 percent) through 26 games.
Tony Lights the Lamp
Tony Calderone's 15 goals are the most by a U-M player over the first 26 games of a season since Tyler Motte's 26 goals in 26 games during the 2015-16 campaign.
Marody in Good Company
Cooper Marody's 31 points are the most by a Wolverine through 26 games since Kyle Conner had 45 in 2015-16.
Quinntessential Blue Liner
Freshman defenseman Quinn Hughes' 15 points (1G, 14A) from the point are the most by a U-M freshman blue liner through 26 games since Zach Werenski had 21 points through that span in 2014-15.
Climbin' the Ranks
Cooper Marody ranks tied for 13th nationally with 31 points on the season and is tied for seventh with 22 assists. Tony Calderone is tied for 13th nationally with 15 goals.
GOALLL!
Michigan ranks 13th in the nation in goals per game, averaging 3.19 goals over its first 26 games. Calderone ranks tied for 15th in the nation in goals per game at 0.58.

U-M in the Olympics

They become the 15th and 16th Wolverines to compete in hockey at the Winter Olympics (eight USA, four Canada, one Austrian, one Japan and one Sweden).
Additionally, Wisconsin head coach Tony Granato was tabbed in the same role for Team USA during the 2018 Winter Olympics and will be absent from the Badgers bench while in South Korea.
