ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The fall season is in full swing for the University of Michigan baseball team, which recently announced its 2019 regular-season schedule. The Wolverines added 11 new faces in the offseason after losing five players to Major League Baseball -- including three draft selections -- at the close of the 2018 campaign.
The Wolverines scheduled two fall exhibition games for the 2018 non-championship season as part of new NCAA legislation that allows programs to schedule scrimmages against outside competition without the contests counting against its spring allotment.
After weeks of practice, Michigan competed in its first fall competition last Sunday (Oct. 7), which featured a 22-10 victory over Lansing Community College at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The exhibition was scheduled for 14 innings.
The Stars jumped on the board first, posting two runs in the top of the second inning. After a quiet start with just one run in the game's first five innings, the Wolverines scored multiple runs in five of the next six innings. Michigan's largest scoring outburst came in the sixth inning, when they took the lead with a seven-run frame. The Wolverines continued to build on their lead with five runs in both the 10th and 11th innings to secure the win.
Led by three underclassmen, Michigan totaled 20 hits on the day. Sophomore Joe Donovan paced the team with five RBI, including a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Keaton Carratini also homered and finished the day with three RBI, while freshman Riley Bertram posted three RBI on two hits.
As a pitching staff, the Wolverines allowed five earned runs on 11 hits through 14 innings. Freshman Willie Weiss pitched two perfect innings, retiring all six batters faced and throwing just 17 pitches. Freshman Dillon Nowicki also pitched a perfect 12th inning.
Michigan will wrap up the fall season with a trip to Kentucky this Sunday (Oct. 14). Admission is free for fans, and first pitch is tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m.
Upon their return, the Wolverines will host two free two-day intrasquad scrimmages at Ray Fisher Stadium on Oct. 20-21 and Oct. 27-28. Michigan also will host its annual Halloween Batting Practice on Oct. 31 with time to be announced.
