
Senior Trio Earns CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior captains Maddy Abbott, Jenna Lerg, and Carly Skjodt of the University of Michigan volleyball team were named to the Academic All-District teams, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday (Nov. 15). Skjodt earned her second-straight first team selection, while Abbott and Lerg garnered second team honors.
To be eligible, nominated student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average in her second year at the current institution and must have played in at least 50 percent of the team's matches. The selections for District Five include students from Division I programs in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
Abbott, Lerg, and Skjodt were all named to the Academic All-Big Ten list last fall and were named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars at the end of the 2017-18 school year. Skjodt (first team) and Lerg (second team) also garnered 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.
A 6-foot-1 outside hitter, Skjodt has led the Wolverine offense this season with a team-best 416 kills at 4.20 kills per set, which ranks third in the Big Ten. As a six-rotation player, the Indianapolis, Indiana, native has posted 23 double-digit kill efforts this season alone, including nine kill-dig double-doubles, and ranks third on the squad with 2.57 kills per set. Skjodt is one of just seven student-athletes to earn the first team distinction.
In her role as Michigan's libero, Lerg has anchored the back-row defensive efforts for the Wolverines this season. A native of Farmington Hills, Michigan, she leads Michigan with 5.07 digs per set, which ranks second in the Big Ten Conference. Lerg has recorded 24 double-digit dig efforts this season, including 10 matches with 20 digs or more, and has led the Wolverines in digs 23 times. She ranks third all-time at Michigan with 1,8722 digs to date.
As a serving specialist and backup setter, Abbott has appeared in all 28 matches for the Wolverines this season. The Corona del Mar, California, native ranks second on the team with 21 service aces as well as 0.22 aces per set. She also ranks third in total assists with 36 -- good for 0.37 per set -- and leads non-starters in point-scoring.
Lerg and Abbott are two of just seven student-athletes to earn second-team honors.
