ATHENS, Ga. -- Freshman Maggie MacNeil became the fourth woman in NCAA history to crack 50 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly (49.97) and later won the 100-yard backstroke (51.31), highlighting the efforts of the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team on Friday (Nov. 30) at the UGA Fall Invitational. After two days, U-M continues to lead in the team race (678 points), holding a 99.5-point lead on Cal.
"The conversation we have throughout every session is that everyone matters, everyone counts," said head coach Mike Bottom. "We've had some ups and downs here. Everyone that has fallen down has gotten back up, and we'll expect that to continue tomorrow. We're setting ourselves up for the end of the year where everyone scores points for Michigan."
"Maggie continues to perform at a level that we've never seen. We're excited about her future. She's only going to get better."
MacNeil continued to make waves on Friday. Her history-making swim in the 100-yard butterfly came first, as she lowered her previously set Big Ten and U-M records to 49.97. It is the fourth-fastest time in NCAA history, trailing only Louisville alum Kelsi (Worrell) Dahlia (49.43) and current collegiate swimmers Louise Hansson of USC (49.80) and Erika Brown of Tennessee (49.84). Sophomore Alexis Margett joined her in the final, finishing eighth (53.63), while junior Vanessa Krause shaved a second to win the consolation heat (52.73).
MacNeil returned to the pool a short time later to finish the double, winning the 100-yard backstroke. She had not swum the event all season prior to Friday, but it hardly mattered as she cruised to the win in 51.31. It is the second-fastest time in school history, only a tenth-of-a-second behind Ali DeLoof's school record from 2016 (51.21). Senior Taylor Garcia also scored points for the team, finishing seventh (53.53).
The Wolverines had five of the top 10 times in the 200-yard freestyle, led by senior Siobhán Haughey, who took three-and-a-half seconds off her preliminaries time to win in finals (1:41.77). Joining her in the final were seniors Catie DeLoof (sixth, 1:44.89) and Yirong Bi (seventh, 1:45.01), while senior Becca Postoll (ninth, 1:46.16) and sophomore Sierra Schmidt (10th, 1:46.80) represented U-M in the consolation final.
Senior/junior Miranda Tucker and senior Jamie Yeung were 1-2 out of the morning in the 100-yard breaststroke and held those spots in the final, both improving their times. Tucker took first (59.09), while Yeung was second (59.77), the third-fastest time in school history. She's the fourth woman in school history to crack one minute.
The Wolverines had a 1-2 finish on the one-meter springboard, with both divers improving their scores
from the morning's preliminaries. Sophomore Nikki Canale took top honors (287.10), while freshman Allie Klein followed in second (274.70).
After taking the eighth and final spot in the 400-yard individual medley final during the morning's preliminaries, freshman Victoria Kwan vastly improved her seed, shaving five-and-a-half seconds off to take second (4:11.05). That's the seventh-fastest time in school history. Yeung held the No. 6 seed out of the morning, but scratched out to focus solely on the 100-yard breaststroke.
The foursome of Garcia, Tucker, MacNeil and Haughey set the school record in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing second to Cal in 1:36.06. The previous record was 1:36.92, set in February during a time trial at the Big Ten Championships. Bi, DeLoof, Haughey and MacNeil all returned to swim on the 800-yard freestyle relay, getting an NCAA 'A' time with a third-place finish (7:01.67).
The UGA Fall Invitational concludes Saturday (Dec. 1) with preliminaries beginning at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 3 p.m.
