ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback (25-20, 30-28, 25-19) at the hands of the Maryland Terrapins on Wednesday evening (Nov. 7) inside Cliff Keen Arena.
The loss is Michigan's first to Maryland in program history, which includes nine total meetings.
Both teams worked efficiently in the first set with limited errors, but it was Maryland (16-11, 7-8 B1G) that took an early lead at 4-3. The Terps used a .352 team hitting percentage and pulled away for a four-point edge, 15-11, before taking an 18-12 to coerce Michigan into taking both of its timeouts. Despite a late push and back-to-back kills from redshirt junior Cori Crocker, as well as a service ace by senior Maddy Abbott, Michigan was unable to overcome the deficit as Maryland took the first set, 25-20.
Maryland raced out to an early lead in the second set and went ahead by five, 9-4, before Michigan (19-7, 8-7 B1G) called its first timeout. The Wolverines kept pace from there but the Terps remained in the lead, taking advantage of multiple Maize and Blue miscues. Down 21-16 and looking to spark a momentum shift, Michigan switched setters and freshman Erin O'Leary took the court in her collegiate debut. The Wolverines took advantage of the change in offense and rallied to fight off set point with a kill from Carly Skjodt that tied the score at 24. Michigan fought off a total of four set points with kills from Skjodt, O'Leary, and a big double-block from O'Leary and junior Katarina Glavinic, but Maryland ultimately took the frame by a 30-28 score.
The teams traded points to begin the third set before Maryland took a three-point edge, 13-10, which forced a Michigan timeout. Serving runs from junior setter MacKenzi Welsh and freshman Paige Jones allowed the Wolverines to tie the score at 17 and cause Maryland to take a timeout, but the Terps responded with an 8-2 run to close out the final set, 25-19.
Senior outside hitter Carly Skjodt led the Wolverines with 10 kills, while Jones posted nine. Michigan finished with a season-low .066 team hitting percentage.
Defensively, senior libero Jenna Lerg totaled a match-high 25 digs. Glavinic led the front row with four blocks.
O'Leary picked up five assists to go with three digs and a block in her collegiate debut.
The Wolverines will return to action on Sunday (Nov. 10) when they host No. 6-ranked Nebraska. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside Cliff Keen Arena. Tickets for the match are sold out.
