Wolverine Bites
• The Wolverines kick off a new era in 2018-19 under the leadership of first-year head coach Sean Bormet. A two-time NCAA All-American and Big Ten champion at 158 pounds at Michigan (1991-94), Bormet spent the last seven years as the top assistant at his alma mater and was elevated to the head job on March 27, 2018, after the retirement of 19-year head coach Joe McFarland.
• Through 96 years of U-M wrestling history, Michigan has posted a 64-30-2 record in its first dual meet of the season. Last season, the Wolverines claimed six of 10 bouts, earning major decisions in three, to defeat Arizona State, 21-18, in U-M's season opener at Detroit Catholic Central High School.
• Michigan returns seven starters from a season ago, including two-time All-Americans Stevan Micic (133 pounds), Alec Pantaleo (157) and Myles Amine (174), and 2017 All-American Logan Massa (165). Drew Mattin (125) and Malik Amine (149), both first-time NCAA qualifiers in 2017-18, also return.
• The Wolverines will start the 2018-19 season with seven wrestlers ranked nationally at their respective weight classes, including four in the top five according to FloWrestling: No. 3 Micic (133), No. 4 Pantaleo (157), No. 5 Massa (165) and No. 3 Amine (174).
• Among the Wolverines' returners, three -- Micic, Myles Amine and Pantaleo -- already own at least 70 career wins. Micic leads the pack with a 74-13 mark, while Amine and Pantaleo are 71-16 and 70-14, respectively. Last season, Adam Coon became the 36th Wolverine wrestler to reach 100 wins, finishing his career with a stellar 116-15 record.
• Michigan welcomed an eight-man freshman class to Ann Arbor this fall. The class, which ranked as high as No. 4 in the national recruiting rankings, combined for 14 high school state titles and includes three wrestlers listed among the top 30 national recruits by InterMat and FloWrestling -- No. 3 Mason Parris (Hwt), No. 7 Joey Silva (133) and No. 28 Will Lewan (157). As of now, all freshmen remain in redshirt; those decisions will be an ongoing process over the first semester.
• U-M also added an offseason transfer in redshirt sophomore Kanen Storr, a Leslie, Michigan, native, who spent his first two seasons at Iowa State and was ranked as high as 11th at 141 pounds last season by FloWrestling. He was a three-time Michigan state champion and four-time finalist.
• The Wolverines boasted three individual champions, eight finalists and 13 total placewinners at last Saturday's Michigan State Open (Nov. 3). Storr, Lewan and Parris all posted 4-0 records to capture the open-division titles at 141 and 157 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.
• Redshirt junior Myles Amine also posted a notable performance last Friday (Nov. 2), cruising to an 11-2 major decision over Oklahoma State's 10th-ranked Jacobe Smith at the annual NWCA All-Star Classic. Amine scored on two takedowns and a four-point near fall and accumulated 2:27 in riding-time advantage. Amine was the 40th Michigan wrestler to earn a NWCA All-Star selection and seventh over the last three seasons.
• Michigan will face eight teams ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) preseason poll, most notably four top-10 teams in No. 1 Penn State, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 6 Lehigh and No. 10 Arizona State. Twelve of 14 Big Ten schools were either ranked or receiving votes to start the 2018-19 season. Michigan earned the No. 4 preseason ranking.

Scouting the Opposition
Central Michigan: The Chippewas will make their dual debut against Michigan on Sunday. They had four total placewinners in the open division -- and two in the freshman/sophomore division -- at last weekend's MSU Open (Nov. 3), with Matt Stencel taking runner-up honors for their top individual finish. Stencel is CMU's lone nationally-ranked wrestler, with the No. 15 spot at heavyweight. Michigan owns a 24-7 advantage in the all-time series against Central Michigan, dating back to 1982, and claimed the most recent meeting, 30-9, in last season's dual finale in Ann Arbor.
Last Time Out
The Wolverines boasted three individual champions, eight finalists -- all in the open division -- and 13 total placewinners at the Michigan State Open on Saturday (Nov. 3). All three individual champions were program newcomers in redshirt sophomore transfer Kanen Storr (141 pounds) and true freshmen Will Lewan (157) and Mason Parris (Hwt). Storr and Lewan won by earning close decision wins over teammates, while Parris scored a quick fall -- his third bonus win of the day -- in his championship bout. [ Full recap ]
