COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Junior Charlie Swanson of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team has been selected to represent the United States at the 2019 Pan American Games, per an announcement from USA Swimming on Tuesday (Dec. 18). The Games will take place Aug. 6-10 in Lima, Peru.
The Pan American Games are the world's third-largest international multisport games; they are only surpassed in size and scope by the Olympic Summer Games and the Asian Games. Both the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games are held every four years for the athletes of the 41 PASO member nations, in the year preceding the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games.
Swanson will swim his signature event, the 400-meter IM, in Lima. He finished seventh in that event at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials and has been a member of the U.S. National Team since September 2017. He placed sixth in the 400-meter IM at the 2018 Phillips 66 National Championships. In short course, Swanson is the two-time defending Big Ten champion in the 400-yard IM, and was a CSCAA All-American last year as a sophomore, finishing sixth at the NCAA Championships.
