ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Using 14-0 run over the final 4:16 of the second quarter to take control of the game, the University of Michigan women's basketball team handed No. 12-ranked Minnesota its first loss of the season, 76-60, Monday afternoon (Dec. 31) at Crisler Center.
Senior Hallie Thome turned in 14 points and six rebounds, and freshman Amy Dilk matched her in the scoring column with 14 points and five assists. Sophomore Deja Church rounded out Michigan's double-figure scorers, going for 13 points, three rebounds and three steals.
Sophomore Hailey Brown and freshman Naz Hillmon each chipped in nine points, while senior Nicole Munger and junior Akienreh Johnson each turned in eight. U-M forced the Gophers into 23 turnovers, resulting in 26 Wolverine points.
Facing a 7-5 deficit early, Michigan went on a 6-0 run that featured free throws from Thome and layups from Dilk and Church for an 11-7 lead after forcing a 10-second violation with 4:35 remaining in the first quarter.
Minnesota took its first lead since the early moments off a layup from Palma Kaposi with 7:06 remaining in the second quarter. Munger hit a three-pointer in transition with 5:25 to go in the frame, forcing a Minnesota timeout as Michigan regained a 22-20 lead.
The Gophers' final bucket of the second quarter came at the 4:16 mark, trimming Michigan's lead to four, 26-22. Michigan erupted for the final 14 points of the quarter, getting six points each from Hillmon and Brown along with a layup from Dilk. Brown hit a stepback jumper with three seconds remaining, sending Michigan to the locker room with a 40-22 lead.
The Maize and Blue outscored Minnesota, 25-19, in the third quarter and extended its lead to as many as 26 points en route to a 24-point cushion (65-41) after three quarters.
Minnesota opened the fourth quarter on a 7-1 run, forcing a Michigan timeout with 8:08 left and its lead down to 18, 66-48.
Church hit a deep three-pointer to beat the shot clock at the 6:39 mark, stopping the Gopher surge and pushing Michigan's lead back to 19, 69-50. Michigan kept the double-digit lead the rest of the way en route to its second win over a top-25 team this season.
Michigan will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 5), traveling to Purdue to take on the Boilermakers at 6 p.m. The game can be seen live on Big Ten Network.
