
Wolverines Fall in Final Seconds at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team had the final possession of the game but could not get its last-second shot to fall, dropping a 71-70 contest at Purdue on Saturday (Jan. 5) at Mackey Arena.
Purdue took a one-point lead with 24.6 seconds left, with Michigan calling a timeout to advance the ball. After not getting something off the initial action, Michigan called another timeout with 13 ticks left. Hailey Brown took a fallaway jumper on the left wing with four seconds remaining, but it found the back iron and Michigan did not get a second look.
U-M had four players in double figures, with senior Hallie Thome turning in 16 points and seven boards, along with freshman Amy Dilk going for 16 points and six assists. Senior Nicole Munger had 12 points and three boards, with sophomore Hailey Brown rounding out Michigan's double-figure scorers with 10 points. Michigan held a 26-25 advantage on the glass as both teams shot well from the field, with Michigan shooting 52.8 percent (28-for-53) and Purdue shooting 55.1 percent (27-for-49).
Michigan raced out to a 9-2 lead just 2:41 into the game on three free throws from Munger and baskets from sophomore Deja Church, Brown and Thome. Michigan stayed in front the rest of the quarter, leading by one after the first 10 minutes.
Purdue took a 25-23 advantage with 6:04 to go in the second quarter for its first lead of the game. The Boilers led by as many as four points in the middle stages of the period.
Michigan took a 34-33 lead into the locker room after Dilk outscored Purdue, 7-2, over the final 2:15 of the second quarter. She hit her second three-pointer of the season off an offensive rebound, followed by a pair of layups -- the second off a freshman Naz Hillmon steal in the backcourt with 30 seconds remaining.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with Purdue taking a 56-55 lead into the fourth quarter. Neither team led by more than four points in the frame that featured nine lead changes and three tied scores.
Purdue opened a four-point lead in the opening minutes of the fourth before Thome hit a pair at the line and Munger scored in transition to tie it up at 63 with 6:27 left.
Purdue regained the lead for the next several minutes until Dilk found Thome underneath for two with 1:06 remaining in the game to give Michigan a 70-69 lead.
Dominique Oden's layup just rolled over the rim on Purdue's next possession, putting the Boilermakers ahead by one and setting up the final sequence.
U-M will be back in home action on Tuesday (Jan. 8), when the Wolverines host Northwestern at 7 p.m. There will be free youth admission to the contest, and fans can get a ticket, a hot dog and drink for $6.
