Fall Academic All-Big Ten Selections Announced

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference office released its fall 2018Â Academic All-Big Ten teams on Wednesday (Dec. 5), with the University of Michigan setting a record with 124 student-athletes earning recognition for their work in the classroom, eclipsing last year's record total of 122.
Criteria for making the Academic All-Big Ten team includes a student-athlete being in at least their second academic year at their institution and maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Michigan has seen a dramatic increase since 2009, almost tripling the total of 41 from that season. U-M has only had a decrease in total honors one year since 2009.Â
The breakdown of the 122 Michigan student-athletes on the list is 12 from field hockey, 45 from football, 12 from men's cross country, 19 from women's cross country, 13 from men's soccer, 13 from women's soccer and eight from volleyball.
Michigan's total of 122 Academic All-Big Ten selections led the Big Ten. Northwestern tallied the second most with 117 followed by Michigan State with 114.
The Big Ten also recognizes student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA or above with sophomore women's cross country student-athlete Alice Hill and senior women's soccer student-athlete Jackie White among the notable mentions.
The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the winter and spring seasons, and the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school.
