ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's swimmers Jackson Goethe, Alex King, Seth Kyriakidis and Tim Hanson swam at least one event on the first day of the Michigan First Chance Meet, held Saturday (Feb. 17) at Canham Natatorium.
With the Big Ten Championships beginning next week, the four swimmers put on their racing suits and tried to go faster than their previous in-season and career bests. Goethe, one of the team's captains, initially went 20.21 in the 50-yard freestyle, but came back for a time trial later in the day, breaking 20 seconds for the first time in his career (19.90). Kyriakidis (20.33) and King (20.48) also went faster in that event.
King took off a second-and-a-half in the 100-yard backstroke (47.84), while Kyriakidis cut nearly a second in the 100-yard butterfly (47.68). Hanson pulled double-duty in the distance events, going slightly faster in the 400-yard IM (3:52.22).
