CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team fell to No. 3 Illinois, 405.200-394.900, on Saturday (Feb. 24) at Huff Hall.
The meet marked the first road score for the Maize and Blue this season, and the first competition in the five up, five count format during which five gymnasts compete on each apparatus and their scores count toward the team total. Michigan (1-2) had its only lead of the meet after the third rotation, highlighted by a second place vault from freshman Nick Guy (14.35).
Junior Emyre Cole took home an event title on floor with a 14.55. Freshman Jacob Moore was not too far behind Cole with a 14.30 to take second place on the apparatus.
Despite several falls on pommel horse, Michigan took home second and third place from junior Uche Eke (14.00) and freshman Cameron Bock (13.30), respectively.
Redshirt junior Marty Strech tied for the event title on still rings with a 14.15. The Wolverines' rings rotation was highlighted by several stuck landings during the fourth rotation.
Michigan finished the day on high bar followed by parallel bars. Bock finished second in both events with a 14.20 on high bar and 13.80 on parallel bars, but his strong performances on the final two events did not help the Maize and Blue recapture the lead.
The Illini's success was highlighted by a 15.00 on vault from Bobby Baker, who entered the meet ranked fourth in the country in the event. Illinois also took home five of the six event titles, excluding floor exercise and tying on rings.
The Wolverines will return to action Saturday (March 3), as they travel to the International Collegiate Challenge, hosted by Stanford. In addition to Michigan and Stanford, the meet will also feature Illinois and California, as well as the Japanese and Canadian national teams.
