CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- University of Michigan men's track and field junior Taylor McLaughlin started off the Wolverines' 2018 outdoor season on the right foot as he claimed an event win to lead a squad of sprinters and jumpers at the Miami Hurricane Invitational on Friday and Saturday (March 16-17).
McLaughlin clocked a wind-legal 20.95 with a 1.9 meter-per-second tailwind to take the victory at 200 meters to headline seven top-five performances for the Wolverines in their first meet of the spring.
With his performance, McLaughlin -- who will eventually transition to the 400-meter hurdles event in which he is a two-time All-American -- became just the seventh man in school history to dip under 21 seconds in the event outdoors, and the first to do so in nearly a decade. Adam Harris was the last man to break the barrier in 2009.
Also taking top-five from the 200 was sophomore Desmond Nicholas, who took fourth with a wind-aided 21.29 (+3.3m/s).
Sophomore hurdler Roland Amarteifio excelled in his 2018 spring debut as he approached career-best performances in both the 110-meter hurdles (14.40, +0.9m/s) and the 400-meter hurdles (53.91). The former performance was good for third overall, while the latter was nearly a three-second improvement over his first effort at that distance in 2017.
Redshirt freshman Alex Schwedt opened his overall 2018 season for Michigan with nearly a half-second career-best over 400 meters (48.24) for fifth.
Amarteifio and Schwedt teamed up with Josiah Carpenter and Desmond Melson to finish runner-up in the meet-finale 4x400 relay in 3:13.72. Amarteifio finished the penultimate leg strong to give the baton to Melson narrowly in second, and Melson did his part to hold off a hard-charging Miami squad to take second.
In the field, Daniel Butael's 7.05m (23 feet, 1.75 inches, +0.6m/s) mark in the long jump -- one of two seven-meter jumps on the afternoon -- was good for fourth, while Brandon Piwinski cleared 2.00m (6-6.75) on his first try Friday night to take fourth in that event.
