MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team began the 2018 NCAA Championships with a 13th-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay on Wednesday (March 21) at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
The foursome of junior Mokhtar Al-Yamani (1:34.33), sophomore Felix Auböck (1:31.90), freshman Ricardo Vargas (1:35.52) and senior Tristan Sanders (1:35.35) went 6:17.10. They contributed eight points toward the team total.
"It was a solid swim that scored points for the team," said head coach Mike Bottom. "We risked it a bit by putting a sprinter and a distance swimmer on it, but they were both solid. It's incredibly hard to score points at this meet. Our goal is to score as many points as we can in as many events as we can."
The NCAA Championships continue tomorrow (March 22) with the first full day of competition at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Preliminaries are at 10 a.m. CT, with finals following at 6 p.m.
