ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan softball team broke through for a run in the fourth inning and rode freshman left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien to a 1-0 shutout of in-state rival Michigan State on Wednesday evening (April 11) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
Beaubien (24-2) went the distance in the circle, allowing just two hits while striking out seven to record her eighth shutout of the season. On the offensive side, Michigan tallied six hits by six different Wolverines. The Maize and Blue stranded six runners on the evening, but got a timely run in the fourth inning and held up defensively the rest of the game.
Michigan got on the board in the fourth inning, manufacturing a run after a leadoff single down third-base line from senior first baseman Tera Blanco. After a fielder's choice kept a runner at first, sophomore third baseman Madison Uden beat out a bunt single to advance the runner into scoring position. Sophomore Thais Gonzalez stepped in to pinch-run at second and scored, sliding in safely on a play at the plate after junior Katie Alexander knocked a fielder's choice at the MSU shortstop.
After back-to-back six-pitch innings for Beaubien in the fourth and fifth frames, MSU threatened in the sixth, beating an infield single to put a runner on with two outs before Beaubien worked out of a 3-1 count to deal a swinging strikeout. The Spartans went down in order in the seventh, punctuated by a three-pitch Beaubien punchout to end the game.
Michigan (33-7, 8-1 Big Ten) is back in home action this weekend, hosting Rutgers in a three-game weekend series at Alumni Field. The series opener is Friday (April 13) at 6 p.m. Tickets remain available through the U-M Ticket Office.
