GREENSBORO, N.C. -- With a final-round 310 team tally and a career-best individual low finish for freshman Ashley Kim, the University of Michigan women's golf team closed its regular season with a 910 54-hole total to finish eighth today (Saturday, April 7) at the Bryan National Collegiate held at the Bryan Park Golf Course.
"Today was a real weather test with the rain, wet conditions and cold," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "As a team, we played 89 out of 90 holes today without a double bogey. That stat says a lot about our team's patience today and toughness. Additionally, we were the low team round in the first round. I hope our players get a moment to soak that in and help boost our confidence heading into the postseason. We competed hard in a great field of teams and I'm proud of that."
With a pair of opening 72s (E) from Kim and sophomore Alisa Synder, who started her first event of the season, added to a 73 (+1) from senior Emily White, the Wolverines got off to a strong start posting a spring low and round best 291 opening tally to put themselves atop the leaderboard.
As U-M continued onto the second 18 of the day, the Wolverines found trouble on the front nine of Bryan Park as Michigan closed with a 309 to drop to 10th after the first day of play. Kim produced the Maize and Blue's top score with a 74 (+2), as she positioned herself among the top 10 individually (t-9th) with a 146 36-hole total.
With clouds hovering and sprinkles, the field was able to start the final 18 holes. With a 76, Snyder rallied from her second round 82 to lead the Maize and Blue in the final round while Kim, White and junior Elodie Van Dievoet all carded 78s to give U-M a 310 closing tally.
With a 910 total, U-M was able to move up two spots and finish eighth, equaling its lowest finish since the season opening tournament -- the East & West Match Play Challenge. Originally scheduled as a three-day event, weather threatened weekend play and the 17-team field opted to play 36 holes on Friday leaving two days available for the final 18 holes.
With her spring-low 224 54-hole total, Kim led U-M for the third straight event with a career-best tie for 12th. White followed behind tying for 29th with a 227 (73-76-78) total. After tying her season-low with a 72 in the first round and closed with a 76, Snyder tied for 41st at 230.
"Ashley (Kim) had a great tournament," added Dowling. "What's so encouraging is that the conditions were tough all weekend. Her first two rounds might be her best of the year considering the golf course and wind she dealt with. Ashley's learning how to control her trajectory in windy conditions and score. It's exciting to see her progress and we are very happy for her."
With the eight tournament regular season completed, the Wolverines shift their focus to the postseason. U-M begins with the Big Ten Tournament, Friday through Sunday, April 20-22, at the TPC's Rivers Bend in Maineville, Ohio. Van Dievoet will look to defend her individual title.
