ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's basketball head coach Kim Barnes Arico announced the promotion of Melanie Moore to associate head coach on Friday (May 18). Moore has been on the sidelines with Barnes Arico at Michigan since 2012 and helped the Maize and Blue to 134 wins.
"Mel's loyalty and commitment the last six years has been invaluable to our program's success," Barnes Arico said. "She is a tireless worker, whether she is recruiting the top talent in the country or developing our student-athletes to reach their potential. Her energy and enthusiasm for our program and this university is contagious to everyone she comes in touch with."
"I would like to thank Coach Arico and the administration for believing in me and what I have brought to this program. Michigan is a special place that means so much to my family. We have been able to accomplish a lot over the past six seasons, and the future of Michigan women's basketball is so bright. I am excited to continue working alongside Coach as we continue the excellence we have established on and off the court."
Moore has served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator the past six seasons, helping Michigan women's basketball to unprecedented success. U-M has made the postseason in each of the last six campaigns, highlighted by a pair of NCAA Tournament second-round appearances (2013, 2018) and the 2017 WNIT championship. The Wolverines have strung together six straight 20-win campaigns, the longest stretch in program history.
Moore has been integral to Michigan's recruiting success over the past several years, signing multiple top-20 classes. The incoming 2018 class is currently ranked No. 12 by ESPN HoopGurlz, with four players ranked in the top 100 in the country.
Moore works with the post players, most notably helping Hallie Thome earn back-to-back All-Big Ten first-team honors and 2018 WBCA All-Region recognition. Thome also participated at the 2017 USA Basketball U24 Team trials last summer and is on pace to become Michigan's third 2,000-point scorer.
