EUGENE, Ore. -- Competing in the lone women's event of the day at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Aaron Howell of the University of Michigan positioned herself for a run at All-America honors in her signature event.
A late addition to the 24-woman field after an injury forced another competitor out of the meet, Howell concluded her first of two days in the heptathlon in 19th overall with 3,275 points. After four of seven events, she finds herself just 98 points shy of the top-16, which is the threshold for second team All-America honors.
Howell opened her endeavor with a career best in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 13.86 (+0.9m/s) for the first sub-14-second performance of her career. The mark was good for the 15th-best, netting her 998 points.
Despite coming short of her career best in the high jump with a best of 1.69m (5 feet, 6.5 inches), it was enough to score 842 points and move up to 12th through two events. Things looked dicey for Howell early, as she needed all three attempts to get over at 1.63m (5-4.25) -- a mishap that would have dropped her all the way to 23rd.
Howell surged into the top-eight after the shot put, heaving a mark of 12.84m (42-1.5) on her second attempt for 717 more points and the fifth-best mark of anyone in the field. That performance propelled her to seventh overall, just 20 points from sixth place, but also just 100 points clear of 19th in a heavily bunched-up field.
She closed the day with a 26.93 (+0.8m/s) clocking over 200 meters.
The heptathlon will resume with its three-event schedule for day two at 11:30 a.m. PDT on Saturday with the long jump. That will be followed by the javelin throw at approximately 12:45 p.m. PDT and conclude with the 800 meters, tentatively scheduled for 5:13 p.m. PDT.
Howell will be joined in action on the last day of the NCAA Championships by 3,000-meter steeplechase finalist Claire Borchers. Her is scheduled to go off at 3:54 p.m. PDT.
