Michigan Men Announce Full Incoming Class for 2019

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Head coaches Jerry Clayton and James Henry of the University of Michigan track and field and cross country program announced on Friday (Aug. 10) the full contingent of 23Â student-athletes who represent the first men's incoming class that will train exclusively at the new U-M Athletics South Competition and Performance Center.
In addition to 10 men who signed National Letters of Intent in November of 2017 -- Jack Boyle, Ian Davis, Anthony Giannobile, Asani Hampton, Cole Johnson, John Meyer, Job Mayhue, Gabriel Mudel, John Tatter and Nick Trevisan -- 13Â more, including a trio of transfers, have committed to joining the Wolverines starting in the 2018-19 academic year.
Henry, Clayton and the rest of the program are excited to welcome into the U-M family transfers Jack Lint (Virginia), Devin Meyrer (Baylor) and Ryan Robinson (Michigan State), and incoming first-year Wolverines Anthony DeKraker, Cassidy Henshaw, Brian Hill, Will Landowne, Evan Meyer, Jack Nicholson, Austin Remick, Derrick Simmons, Thomas Weiss and Colton Yesney.
Together from across 10 different states, they form an acclaimed group that has been recognized nationally for its quality and depth.
By Milesplit, the class is part of the No. 6 overall recruiting class nationally (taking into account both men and women), while the distance corps is recognized by the Stride Report as the No. 8 class in the country and by Flotrack as "honorable mention" nationally.
"With significant national-level talent in every event group joining the program as part of this recruiting class, this group has the potential to be one of the best classes in the country not just on paper, but also on the track and in the field." Clayton said. "Whether it's in the throws, the distance events, the jumps, or the sprints and hurdles, this class will have the opportunity to come into our program and make a difference at the conference level and beyond right away."
All told, those 22 men combined to win 19 high school state titles in track and field and/or cross country, with no fewer than nine among them having competing at the prestigious New Balance National track and field meet either indoors and/or outdoors -- including national champions in DeKraker, Hill and Johnson and another runner-up in Mayhue.
Leading the way in the state titles department is thrower John Meyer, whose five-title career was capped off by a 2018 season that saw him become the nation's only shot putter over 70 feet both indoors and outdoors.
Not only will this class be adding to the long, storied legacy of Michigan track and field and cross country, they will also be part of the newest chapter of that story as the first class to exclusively compete and train for the full duration of their collegiate careers in the state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor facilities set to open this winter. Though last year's class will have competed in the new facility for all of their careers, they spent the fall in the previous indoor facility and part of the spring at old Ferry Field as construction concluded at the Athletics South Competition and Performance Center.
"Up until this year, recruits were only able to look at pictures of what the new facility was going to look like," Henry said. "This year they were able to experience it in person and see our new world-class building for themselves, and that, combined with our strength in both athletics and academics, really made a difference."
They will have the advantage of utilizing the nation's only indoor facility that features both a hydraulically banked 200-meter track that features the same surface as that used for the track at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland, Oregon, and a 300-meter practice track running along the inner perimeter of the facility.
The building also features large, indoor-outdoor throwing bays on the south side of the facility in addition to spacious runways for pole vaulting and jumps events.
With work on the new outdoor track adjacent to the indoor building also complete as of this spring, this incoming class will also be the first to train and compete exclusively at that venue.
