ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team wrapped up its preseason with a 2-0 win over Loyola-Chicago in a weather-shortened match on Saturday (Aug. 18) at U-M Soccer Stadium. Junior Lucas Rosendall and sophomore Umar Farouk Osman tallied goals for the Wolverines.
U-M was on the front foot from the opening whistle, outshooting the Ramblers by a 12-1 margin. Senior Robbie Mertz had the first quality chance, but his right-footed curler bounced off the post. Rosendall was in position and collected the rebound, but his follow-up attempt went high over the bar.
The home side dominated possession and was rewarded in the 22nd minute, once again thanks to Mertz. The senior captain dribbled into traffic and absorbed contact, but not before laying the ball off to Rosendall, who ran in behind and blasted a shot into the back-left corner to give Michigan the lead.
The Wolverines doubled their advantage eight minutes later. A Loyola-Chicago player made an errant pass in midfield right to Osman, who sprinted the other way and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one. Michigan went into the locker room up, 2-0, and returned to the field for the second half, but lightning in the area forced a suspension. After an hour delay, the match was called.
Sophomore Henry Mashburn started in net and played all 45 minutes.
The Wolverines open the 2018 season on Friday (Aug. 24), when they welcome Tulsa to U-M Soccer Stadium. First touch is at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the men's soccer ticket page or by calling (866) 296-MTIX.
