ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Jack Hallahan scored 15 seconds after coming on to the pitch and sophomore Umar Farouk Osman followed with his first career goal to pace the University of Michigan men's soccer team to a dominant 3-0 win over UC Riverside on Friday (Aug. 31) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines, who added a third tally on an own goal, ran circles around the Highlanders, holding an 18-2 edge in shots.
Sophomore Henry Mashburn made only one save in net to preserve his second consecutive shutout. Sophomore Mohammed Zakyi added two assists, while Osman and sophomore Austin Swiech each added helpers in the win.
The Wolverines controlled play from the get-go and nearly scored in the 10th minute. Senior Marcello Borges fed a cross into the box to Zakyi, who was denied a goal after a diving save by Riverside goalkeeper Edwyn Gutierrez. Five minutes later, the two connected again, but this time Zakyi's shot from the left side of the box rang off the crossbar.
Hallahan opened the scoring in the 24th minute just seconds after entering the match as a substitute. Zakyi made a run down the left flank and found Osman in the box. His shot ricocheted off the post and fell right to Hallahan, who slotted the ball by Gutierrez to make it 1-0.
It was Osman's turn less than nine minutes later. Just past midfield, Swiech picked out a streaking Zakyi along the right side and played him in behind the defense. As the defenders collapsed, Osman made a run of his own into the center of the six, received the ensuing pass from Zakyi and easily tapped it in to increase the lead to 2-0. It was the Ghanaian's first collegiate goal.
The Highlanders had only one real chance in the first half, coming in the 40th minute, but Mashburn was in position to make a comfortable save. The Wolverines went into halftime up two.
Zakyi attempted to make it three goals in three matches in the 49th minute, when he took a free kick inches off the end line and just outside the box. His attempt was just high of the bar, however. The Wolverines would put the game out of reach in the 58th minute, when UC Riverside's David Cabral deflected a Hallahan shot into his own net, to put Michigan up 3-0.
Michigan returns to the field on Monday (Sept. 3) for a Labor Day matchup with Canisius at U-M Soccer Stadium. First touch is at 1 p.m. It is Kids Go Blue Club Day, while select members of the team will be signing autographs following the match.
