TEAM NOTES
• The Wolverines are in the midst of a six-match homestand to begin the 2018 season after going 1-1-0 last week. Following this week's matches against UC Riverside and Canisius, they will face Western Michigan (Sept. 7) and Marquette (Sept. 10) before beginning Big Ten play at Rutgers (Sept. 15).
• Sophomore forward Mohammed Zakyi is off to a fast start in 2018, scoring goals in each of the team's matches last week -- both on free kicks. He was the only player across the Big Ten to have two goals on the opening weekend of play. Zakyi scored six goals last year, earning Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Henry Mashburn started both matches last week, culminating in a shutout of South Florida on Monday (Aug. 27). Seniors Daniel Mukuna and Peter Brown -- starters against Tulsa -- did not play against the Bulls, with junior Abdou Samake and sophomore Austin Swiech starting in their place. It was Swiech's first career start. Senior Marcello Borges and sophomore Jackson Ragen started both matches.
• Senior co-captain Robbie Mertz scored his first goal of the season against South Florida, giving him eight career goals. He has recorded at least 10 points in each of his last two seasons (11 in 2016, 10 in 2017).
• Freshmen Declan Gaffney and Sosa Emovon made their collegiate debuts last week, each seeing minutes off the bench.
• Through two matches, the Wolverines are generating plenty of chances, recording 32 shots. Nearly half of those attempts -- 15 (46 percent) -- have been on frame.
OPPONENT PREVIEW
UC Riverside is 0-2-0 on the season, dropping matches to Loyola Marymount (3-2) and UC Santa Barbara (3-1) last week. The Highlanders are in the middle of a six-match road trip to begin the season. Roberto Garcia-Vargas, Freymar Omarrson and Daniel Aguirre scored goals for UC Riverside, while goalkeepers Edwyn Gutierrez and Angel Noriega each started one match in net.
Series: This will be the first meeting between the two schools.
Canisius is 1-1-0 on the season, defeating Robert Morris, 3-0, in their opener before losing to Northern Kentucky, 3-2. The Griffins went 12-4-4 last year. Like UC Riverside, Canisius begins its season with six consecutive matches away from home and will play at Michigan State on Friday before making the drive to Ann Arbor. Troy Brady has two goals already this season, while Bryce Tramuta started both matches in goal.
Series: This will be the first meeting between the two schools.
