BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A late second-half surge from Indiana proved to be too much for the University of Michigan women's soccer team as the Hoosiers tied the match with less than three minutes left in regulation before going on to defeat the Wolverines, 3-2, in double overtime in the first Big Ten match of the season Thursday night (Sept. 13).
"We lost a little bit of our focus," said head coach Jennifer Klein. "We had to make a few tweaks in the second half and I think we lost a little bit of our rhythm on the attacking side, which gave them a little more confidence and they were able to capitalize."
Michigan struck quickly with a goal from senior Reilly Martin 28 seconds into the match, and Sarah Stratigakis added the Wolverines' second goal in the 22nd minute. Indiana found late offense against U-M, scoring two goals with under three minutes to play in regulation and sending the match into overtime. The Wolverines earned the shot advantage in the first overtime period, but the Hoosiers scored the golden goal in the second overtime period to come away with the victory in the B1G opener.
Despite the loss, U-M outshot Indiana, 19-16, putting 13 shots on goal compared to the Hoosiers' six. Five Wolverines had multiple shots on goal on the night, including Martin, who led the team with three shots on goal.
Abby Allen continued to pace the Hoosiers, as she scored Indiana's first goal. Claudia Day scored the equalizer off a corner to send the match into overtime, and Chandra Davis netted the game-winning goal in the 107th minute of play. Bethany Kopel earned the win in goal, making 11 saves on the night.
The Wolverines wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Reilly Martin found the back of the net in the first minute when she brought to her feet a cross from her sister, Alia Martin, and put the ball into the bottom-right of the net to give Michigan a 1-0 lead at Indiana.
Reilly Martin continued to be a playmaker for the Maize and Blue when passed a corner kick to Stratigakis at the top of the 18-yard box on the right-hand side of the field. Stratigakis took the one-timer shot from the top of the box and curved it into the top-left half of the net to put Michigan up, 2-0, in the 23rd minute of play.
Michigan took the 2-0 lead, and a narrow 6-5 shot advantage, into halftime. The Wolverines took eight shots, compared to the Hoosiers' two, in the first 20 minutes of play in the second half.
Indiana found three opportunities in the 76th minute, as a throw-in was saved by a diving Izzy Nino before the sophomore goalkeeper made back-to-back saves on a corner to preserve Michigan's 2-0 lead. The Hoosier offensive push was rewarded when Allen found the back of the net on a one-timed, left-footed shot from 12 yards out in the 85th minute.
With just over two minutes remaining in regulation, Indiana earned its fifth corner kick and converted it into the game-tying goal as Dreher found the head of Day in the back-right corner of the goal. Neither team found the golden goal in the remaining two minutes, and the Wolverines were headed to their first overtime match of the season.
Michigan had the first look on a set-piece just moments into the overtime period, but Emma Cooper's shot hit the post to keep the match even at 2. Indiana capitalized on its first opportunity in the second overtime to complete the come-from-behind victory.
Michigan will close out its opening weekend of conference play on Sunday (Sept. 16) when it heads to West Lafayette, Indiana, for a match against Purdue. First touch is set for 1 p.m.
