WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Freshman Raleigh Loughman scored her first career goal late in the second half to lift the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Purdue at Folk Field on Sunday (Sept. 16).
"It was a well-fought battle against a good Purdue team," said head coach Jennifer Klein. "I am very happy with the team's response from Thursday. They demonstrated good perseverance to push and compete and to find a way to win."
Loughman tapped in a cross from Nicki Hernandez on the right side of the pitch to allow the Wolverines to take the narrow win over the Boilermakers. The assist marked the 17th point of the season for Hernandez and the sixth contest in which she has contributed points for U-M.
Sophomore goaltender Izzy Nino earned her second career shutout, making a career-high nine saves on the afternoon for the Maize and Blue, including a crucial save down the stretch.
Sarah Clark led the Purdue offense with three shots, all of which landed on goal, while Sydney Duarte put two shots on goal for the Boilermakers. Freshman goalkeeper Marisa Bova took the loss, making one save on the afternoon.
Both teams had opportunities to score in the first half. Purdue found its initial chance in the 37th minute, when it took back-to-back shots -- the first saved by Nino, with the rebound shot blocked by the Michigan backline.
Minutes later, Hernandez worked her way into the box on the right side of the pitch and took a shot from 10 yards out that would hit the right post before Meredith Haakenson had her rebound shot from outside the 18-yard box blocked by the Boilermaker defense in the 41st minute of play.
The Wolverines tried for one more shot in the closing minutes of the half, but were called offside on the attempt. The teams went into the locker room at halftime scoreless, with Michigan outshooting Purdue, 8-6.
Purdue had the first offensive attacks early in the second half with Nino having to make a diving attempt in the box to keep the Boilermakers from getting on the scoreboard. Hernandez rushed down the left side of the field in the 64th minute of the match and ripped a cross into the box that tapped the toe of a perfectly striking Loughman, who put the ball into the back of the net for the game's first goal.
Haakenson attempted to extend the Michigan lead with just over five minutes to play, with one-timer from 19 yards out that eventually sailed wide of the right post.
Purdue pressed in the closing minutes, getting off two shots in the final five minutes, but the Michigan backline held strong to earn the shutout win.
The Wolverines will be back on the pitch on Thursday (Sept. 20) when they welcome Wisconsin to U-M Soccer Stadium. First touch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
