ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to six matches and secured a hard-fought point in the Big Ten standings with a 1-1 draw with Penn State on Friday (Sept. 21) at U-M Soccer Stadium. Junior Jack Hallahan scored the equalizer in the 70th minute, while sophomore goalkeeper Henry Mashburn made two crucial saves in the overtime periods.
The visitors jumped out to an early lead, scoring 2:10 into the contest on a goal from Christian Sload. Hallahan, who was a problem all night for the Nittany Lions defense, nearly tied it up a minute later, but his curling shot was sent right to PSU goalkeeper Josh Levine. In the 34th minute, Hallahan found some space in the box, faked with his left and fired a shot with his right, but Levine once again was there to palm it away. Senior Robbie Mertz ran onto the rebound and it deflected off a Penn State defender, though cries for hand ball were waved off by the referee.
With the lead, Penn State committed numbers behind the ball, allowing Michigan to soak up possession. The Wolverines hit their stride right after the hour mark and began peppering Penn State with chances. In the 64th minute, Hallahan took one to the end line and zipped a cross back into senior Noah Kleedtke, who tried slotting one into the net, but Levine went low to make the save.
Two minutes later, Mertz lofted a cross to the back post for sophomore Umar Farouk Osman and Kleedtke -- who both ran into the space -- but it narrowly missed both of them. Kleedtke made a hustle play in the 68th minute, saving a ball from going out only to cross it back into the box, but Mertz's header skimmed across the face of goal.
The Wolverines found their well-deserved equalizer in the 70th minute. Sophomore Marc Ybarra, who went on to pick up his fourth assist of the season, passed out wide to Hallahan. He cut inside and fired a shot that deflected off a Penn State defender and into the net, tying the match. Neither team had another solid chance on net the rest of the second half, sending the match to overtime.
The match opened up in extra time, but Mashburn was up to the task. In the 92nd minute, a Michigan foul gave Penn State a free-kick opportunity some 30 yards out. Aaron Molloy fired a twisting shot, just missing the near post. Molloy tested Mashburn again, this time on a header, but the sophomore reacted perfectly to make the save.
The last best chance for either side came in the 105th minute. Off a corner kick, Penn State's Brandon Hackenburg had a shot blocked, but it fell to Molloy, whose follow-up shot was once again saved by Mashburn, sealing the draw.
Michigan will return to the field on Tuesday (Sept. 25), when they welcome rival Ohio State to U-M Soccer Stadium. The match will begin at 7 p.m. and will be televised to a national audience. For tickets, visit MGoBlue.com/tickets or call (866) 296-MTIX.
