ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Reilly Martin and sophomore Nicki Hernandez scored two goals each to pace the Michigan women's soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Central Michigan on Friday night (Sept. 7) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
U-M's (4-3-0) six goals mark the most in a match since the Maize and Blue defeated Eastern Michigan, 8-1, on Aug. 21, 2015.
"Overall, I am very happy with the result we were able to get for our last game in non-conference play," said head coach Jennifer Klein. "It has been a journey for our non-conference games and I feel like we learned a lot and put ourselves in a good position heading into Big Ten play."
The Wolverines took 20 shots, 10 of which reached net, and U-M scored five of its six goals in the first half on Central Michigan goalkeeper Morgan Britain before the Chippewas made a change to start the second half.
Six players contributed to Michigan's six goals, with Martin and Hernandez each scoring twice, Sarah Stratigakis scoring the game-winner and freshman Sammi Atterbury netting her first career goal for the Maize and Blue. Hernandez ended the night with six points, adding two assists, while Martin, Stratigakis and Raleigh Loughman each had an assist.
Freshman Sophia Ivezaj, Kierra Krawec and Sydney Shepherd made their Michigan debuts in the second half and Jada Dayne returned from injury to start against Central Michigan (1-5-0).
Lexi Pelafas scored the only goal of the night for CMU. The Chippewas managed just two shots against the Michigan defense, only one of which was on goal. Britain took the loss, allowing five goals and making three saves, while Briann Wallbridge played the final 45 minutes allowing one goal and making one save.
The Michigan offense got itself going quickly in the first half of play as Martin dribbled around a defender inside the 18-yard box and took a shot into the bottom-left of the net to put the Wolverines up, 1-0, in the fifth minute of play.
U-M's offense continued to press in the first half when Hernandez and Stratigakis had an odd-man rush and Stratigakis beat the keeper to the left side of the net in the 13th minute. Hernandez added a goal minutes later when she tipped in a pass from Martin into the bottom half of the goal.
Martin scored her second goal of the match, when she rushed up the field and ripped a shot into the far corner of the net to extend the U-M lead to 4-0 in the first 20 minutes of action.
The Wolverines added one more tally in the first half when the freshmen duo of Loughman and Atterbury combined for the fifth goal of the half. Loughman brought the ball up the field and passed it up to Atterbury, who went a one-on-one with the keeper, and placed a shot into the bottom-left of the net in the 26th minute of play.
U-M took its 5-0 lead and 11-0 shot advantage against the Chippewas into halftime.
The Wolverines added one final goal in the second half when Stratigakis and Hernandez connected for the second time of the match with Hernandez netting her second goal and Stratigakis earning the assist.
Central Michigan found its first shot and goal of the match when Pelafas was one-on-one with Michigan goalkeeper Izzy Nino. Pelfas pushed the ball past Nino and into bottom of the net after it bounced off the inside of the post in the 70th minute to cap the night's scoring.
U-M will be back in action Thursday (Sept. 13) when it opens Big Ten Conference play on the road at Indiana at 6 p.m. in Bloomington, Indiana. The Wolverines will close out the weekend at Purdue at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16 in West Lafayette, Indiana.
