IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Senior Sydney Wetterstrom, sophomore Paige Jones, and redshirt senior Cori Crocker combined for 40 kills and senior MacKenzi Welsh registered a double-double to help carry the University of Michigan volleyball team to a 3-1 win (27-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-23) over Iowa on Friday (Oct. 11) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The conference win improved Michigan's record to 12-3 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten, the first time in program history that the Wolverines have started conference play with five consecutive wins.
Wetterstrom had 16 kills to go along with 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. For Jones, her 13 kills marked the 11th time this season she tallied double-digit kills and Crocker's .556 attack percentage set a new career high to pace the Wolverines attack. Welsh's double-double was her third of the year.
The Wolverines grabbed the first set, 27-25, helped by a strong showing on the attacking side. Michigan registered a .326 attack percentage with 18 kills in the set. Michigan fought back from two Iowa set points to pull off the victory.
Michigan built on its set-one win with a 25-17 victory in the second stanza. The Wolverine offense also got a boost from four aces in the stanza.
U-M fell behind on the first point of the third set and never could quite regain its footing, fighting from behind the entire set before falling, 25-19.
Michigan responded to claim the match with a 25-23 fourth-set victory. The Wolverines prevailed in a back-and-forth set to win a stanza that featured eight lead changes and was tied 16 times.
