The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team (11-3-1, 6-1-1 Big Ten) concludes its three-game road stint with a short trip to Big Ten in-state rival Michigan State (8-6-1, 1-5-1 Big Ten) on Saturday (Oct. 19). The Wolverines and Spartans will square off at 5 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium in East Lansing, and the match will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
Series History with Michigan State
• The Wolverines hold a 13-7-7 advantage in the all-time series against the Spartans.
• In the last six meetings between the teams, Michigan is 4-2-0 against Michigan State. The Wolverines won last year's meeting, 2-0, in Ann Arbor. That victory sent U-M to the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2017.
Scouting the Spartans
• Michigan State has an 8-6-1 overall record and a 1-5-1 Big Ten record.
• The Spartans average 1.67 goals per match and have scored 25 goals on 83 shots on goal.
• Nine different players have scored a goal this season and points have come from 12 different Spartans.
• Gia Wahlberg leads the team with nine goals and a team-high 18 points, while Paige Webber has 12 points (5G, 2A).
• Camryn Evans and Danielle Stephan have been the setup players for the Spartans with six assists each.
• In net, Lauren Kozal has made all 15 starts with 60 saves and a .750 save percentage.
Where They Stand
• Michigan sits atop the Big Ten standings with 19 points and a 6-1-1 conference record. The Wolverines are one point ahead of No. 10 Wisconsin (18 points, 6-0-0 in Big Ten), which defeated the Wolverines, 2-0, in Madison on Oct. 3 and has a match against Iowa on Thursday night (Oct. 17).
• The Wolverines rank third in the conference in points (82), averaging 5.47 per match. Michigan's 211 shots, 14.07 per match, rank fourth.
• U-M also ranks second in the conference with 26 assists on 28 goals scored.
• Individually, Meredith Haakenson is tied for fifth in the Big Ten with seven goals and Raleigh Loughman is tied for third with 18 points and ranks seventh in goals with six.
• Sarah Stratigakis ranks second in the Big Ten with seven assists and is tied for fifth with 17 points.
Wolverines Make Strides in 2019
• Head coach Jennifer Klein already has made improvements to the Michigan women's soccer team in just her second season at Michigan. With their 11 wins to this point in 2019, the Wolverines have a double-digit win total for the first time since 2016.
• The Wolverines' 6-1-1 Big Ten record has them sitting atop the conference standings with 19 points. Wisconsin, which has played two fewer games and defeated U-M earlier this season, is second with 18 points.
• U-M is ranked No. 19 in the latest edition of the United Soccer Coaches Poll (Oct. 15). It marks the second time Michigan has been ranked in the poll this season; they were ranked No. 24 in the Oct. 1 edition.
• In the latest RPI, Michigan is 28th and sits behind Wisconsin (No. 8) and Rutgers (No. 26) in the Big Ten Conference.
• Michigan has scored 28 goals and needs just two more to tie its season total (30) from a season ago.
• The Wolverines have allowed just 11 goals compared to the 25 they gave up at this point a year ago.
Michigan Duo Earns Big Ten Conference Honors
• Raleigh Loughman and freshman Danielle Wolfe notched Big Ten honors for the first time in their careers. Loughman was named Offensive Player of the Week and Wolfe earned Freshman of the Week honors.
• Loughman led the Wolverines with a six-point weekend as she notched a career-best five points at Illinois (Oct. 11). The sophomore midfielder netted two goals against the Illini and added an assist on the game-winner. She closed out the weekend with an assist on a corner-kick goal at Northwestern (Oct. 13).
• Wolfe scored a career-best two goals at Illinois in 32 minutes. The goals are the second and third of her career as she has been a key offensive contributor off the bench.
