ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team outshot No. 21 Rutgers, 14-7, but fell, 1-0, against the Scarlet Knights on Thursday night (Oct. 24) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Rutgers (13-2-2, 7-2-1 B1G) scored the lone goal of the evening in the closing minutes of the first half. Michigan (12-4-1, 7-2-1 B1G) put five shots on net compared to the Scarlet Knights' four.
Junior Sarah Stratigakis had two chances for U-M, while junior Nicki Hernandez and freshmen Hannah Blake and Danielle Wolfe each put one shot on net. In goal, Hillary Beall made three saves.
Rutgers goalkeeper Meagan McClelland made five saves to keep Michigan off the scoreboard.
The Wolverines had an early chance in the opening frame when Hernandez blasted a shot on net off a great through ball from Blake, but McClelland made a diving save to keep the match scoreless.
The Scarlet Knights sat back most of the first half playing a defensive game until the final minute when Taylor Aylmer brought the ball down the field and fired a shot at Beall. The junior keeper made a huge diving save to her right, but the rebound bounced to Rutgers, which crossed the ball to the right flank for Nneka Monome.
The Michigan defense tried to cut off her angle, but Monome was able to get a shot off and into the bottom-left corner of the net to put Rutgers ahead, 1-0, after one half.
The Wolverines attempted to ramp up its offensive pressure in the second half as Rutgers kept itself defensive with four players in the backfield for the majority of the remaining 45 minutes.
Wolfe had a chance to score the equalizer in the 55th minute, but McClelland was there to scoop the ball and maintain Rutgers' one-goal advantage. The Wolverines continued to push late in the second half when Blake took a shot from just outside the 18-yard box in the 80th minute, but McClelland once again made the scoop save.
Wolfe took one more shot but it did not sneak past the Rutgers keeper and the Scarlet Knights scored the victory.
