ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan football team received a stout defensive effort Saturday (Oct. 5) to top No. 14 Iowa, 10-3, on homecoming at Michigan Stadium.
The Wolverine defense caused four turnovers and sacked Hawkeye quarterback Nate Stanley eight times to help U-M post back-to-back stifling defensive efforts. Iowa managed just 249 yards, well below its season average of 465 yards per game. The Hawkeyes had just one rushing yard in the contest, one week after racking up 351 yards on the ground against Middle Tennessee State.
U-M kept Iowa out of the end zone and has not allowed a touchdown in nine straight quarters dating back to the Wisconsin game on Sept. 21. The Wolverines have allowed only three points over that span.
On Iowa's first drive, Aidan Hutchinson stopped Iowa running back Mekhi Sargent for a loss of three yards and forced a fumble that was recovered by Ambry Thomas at the Iowa 18-yard line. Four plays later, a Jake Moody 28-yard field goal gave Michigan a 3-0 lead with 12:19 remaining in the first quarter.
The Wolverines forced a punt on Iowa's next possession, and a 51-yard completion from quarterback Shea Patterson to wide receiver Nico Collins kickstarted a six-play, 70-yard drive that culminated in a two-yard rushing touchdown by Zach Charbonnet. It was his fourth on the ground this season and extended the Wolverine lead to 10-0 with 8:33 to play in the opening quarter.
The two early scores proved to be enough for Michigan as the defense smothered Iowa and forced six punts in addition to the four turnovers.
Josh Metellus, Lavert Hill and Ambry Thomas each had an interception. The three interceptions were more than Michigan had total over its first four games. Hill and Thomas had one prior to Saturday while Metellus tallied his first of the year. Stanley had thrown 118 passes without an interception prior to the contest.
Five different players combined for the eight sacks. Kwity Paye matched his performance from last week against Rutgers with 2.5 sacks to lead the way, while Jordan Glasgow tied a career high with two sacks to match his total from the Middle Tennessee State game to open the season.
Cameron McGrone tallied 1.5 sacks while Hutchinson added one and Michael Danna recorded his first sack as a Wolverine.
The Wolverines improved to 4-1 (2-1 Big Ten) on the season with all four wins coming at home. The victory extends their win streak at Michigan Stadium to 11 games over the last two seasons. Iowa falls to 4-1 on the year and 1-1 in the Big Ten.
