AKRON, Ohio -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team got a career-high 21 points from senior Akienreh Johnson and used a 31-14 third-quarter advantage to knock off Kent State, 88-53, in the first game of the Akron Classic on Friday afternoon (Nov. 15) at James A. Rhodes Arena.
In addition to her 21 points, Johnson turned eight rebounds in the contest. Sophomore Naz Hillmon just missed her second straight double-double, closing with 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting and nine boards. Senior Kayla Robbins went for nine points, seven boards and three steals, with sophomore Emily Kiser chipping in nine points and three boards off the bench.
Michigan trailed for the first time this season in the first quarter, with Kent State taking a 16-12 lead after the first 10 minutes.
The Wolverines opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run, getting a bucket from Hillmon before she found classmate Amy Dilk for a triple as U-M grabbed a 17-16 lead at the 8:43 mark. Michigan never trailed again, using a 19-9 advantage in the second quarter for a 31-25 halftime lead. Kiser put together an impressive quarter off the bench, scoring five points with two blocks, a rebound and a drawn charge in the period.
It was all Michigan in the third quarter, as U-M put up 31 points to KSU's 14. Johnson hit a triple on Michigan's opening possession, setting the tone for the quarter. A junior Hailey Brown triple with 7:07 on the clock ignited an 8-0 run that pushed Michigan's lead to 17, 50-33, less than two minutes later.
It was all Michigan from there as the Wolverine lead never dipped below 13 the rest of the way. The Wolverines had no letup in the fourth quarter, once again holding the Golden Flashes to 14 points. Freshman Izabel VarejĂŁo led the Maize and Blue in the period, scoring seven points while sophomore Danielle Rauch chipped in six points on a pair of made triples.
Michigan is back in action Saturday (Nov. 16), when they take on host Akron at 2:30 p.m. to conclude the Akron Classic.
