BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Senior quarterback Shea Patterson tied his career best with five touchdown passes -- three to junior Nico Collins -- as the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan football team scored the final 32 points of the game and raced past Indiana, 39-14, on Saturday (Nov. 23) at Memorial Stadium.
The Wolverines (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten), who overcame early deficits of 7-0 and 14-7, have won 24 games in a row over the Hoosiers.
Patterson, who tossed four TD passes against Michigan State last week, matched the five touchdown passes in a game he had when playing for Mississippi. He guided the Michigan offense to 453 total yards against Indiana, finishing 20-of-32 through the air for 366 yards, while Collins logged career highs of 165 yards receiving and three TDs.
Making his first career start, freshman Daxton Hill paced the defense with eight tackles and made his first career interception.
Each team scored a touchdown on its opening drive. After Indiana went 75 yards in 11 plays, capped by Stevie Scott's one-yard leap, the Wolverines answered with a pass-heavy 80-yard drive. Patterson was 7-for-7 for 79 yards with completions to six different receivers, including a 50-yard play to freshman Giles Jackson that moved the ball to the Indiana 7-yard line. After a one-yard rush, Patterson found sophomore Ronnie Bell on a six-yard quick out to the right side of the end zone for Bell's first touchdown of the season.
The teams traded touchdowns again to start the second quarter. Indiana took over on its 48-yard line late in the first quarter after a Michigan punt and needed just seven plays and 2:44 to reach the end zone. A 23-yard pass play from Peyton Ramsey to David Ellis and a 17-yard run by Scott chewed up the most yardage in a drive that culminated with Ramsey's one-yard quarterback sneak at the 14:09 mark.
The Wolverines again responded, starting from their own 38 after Jackson's 38-yard kickoff return. After sophomore Hassan Haskins carried twice for 11 yards and a 17-yard pass play to junior Tarik Black moved the Wolverines into Indiana territory, freshman Zach Charbonnet ran for 22 yards down to the 12-yard line. Two plays later, Patterson found junior Donovan Peoples-Jones on a fade route to the right side, lofting the ball just over a defender to the backpedaling receiver. Senior Quinn Nordin added the PAT, and the game was tied again with 11:01 left in the half.
The next three possessions resulted in three-and-outs before Michigan went 80 yards in 1:26 to take its first lead. Collins was the workhorse with 61 receiving yards, starting with an eight-yard catch on first down. After a short run and a facemask penalty, Patterson hit Collins on a 29-yarder over the middle, followed immediately by a 24-yard TD connection down the left sideline with 5:37 on the clock. Nordin's kick was good to close the first-half scoring with Michigan up, 21-14.
Patterson was 13-for-18 passing for 176 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as the Wolverines outgained the Hoosiers, 232-158.
Michigan quickly stretched its advantage to 18 with scores on its first two possessions of the second half. The Wolverines got a 41-yard reception by Peoples-Jones and converted a fourth-and-one before settling for a 27-yard field goal by Nordin at the 10:04 mark. Then, on second down after getting the ball back on a punt, Patterson rifled the ball to Collins on a slant route that went for 76 yards to the house, with 63 yards coming after the catch. Junior quarterback Dylan McCaffrey ran for the two-point conversion, and U-M had a comfortable 32-14 lead.
The Wolverines took advantage of a turnover to make it a 39-14 game with 1:39 left in the third quarter. Senior Josh Uche knocked the ball out of the quarterback's hand and recovered the fumble at the Indiana 19-yard line. Patterson wasted no time, immediately finding Collins on a post route for the quarterback's fifth TD of the game and the receiver's third.
Indiana drove to the Michigan four-yard line early in the fourth quarter but could not convert on fourth down. Aided by a 35-yard pass play from Patterson to freshman Mike Sainristil, U-M drove to the Indiana 26 before Patterson was intercepted on the Wolverines' final possession.
Michigan will close out the regular season with "The Game" against No. 2 Ohio State next Saturday (Nov. 30) at Michigan Stadium. Fox will televise the noon game to a national audience.
