
No. 23 Michigan Turned Aside in Straight Sets at No. 17 Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Sophomore Paige Jones tallied 15 kills, but the No. 23-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team fell in three sets (17-25, 22-25, 27-29) to Purdue Saturday (Nov. 23) on the road at Holloway Gymnasium.
In addition to her 15 kills, Jones added 13 digs to complete a double-double, leading the charge for the Wolverines. Freshmen May Pertofsky and Jess Robinson collected seven kills each in the contest, while senior MacKenzi Welsh dished out 32 assists and dug out eight balls to help out defensively.
Purdue held the advantage in nearly every major statistical category as the Wolverines hit just .168 to the Boilermakers' .292, had eight service errors compared to Purdue's four, and had seven reception errors to the home team's four.
The Wolverines found themselves in an early hole, losing a tough first set, 25-17. Michigan trailed by as many as eight points as Purdue grabbed the advantage for good at 12-11 in a set that was tied up seven times before the Boilermakers took control.
Michigan then dropped the second set, 25-22, to fall behind two sets to none. Purdue took the lead at 21-20 in a set that was knotted up nine times before the Boilermakers finished out the second stanza.
Purdue finished the sweep with a set-three win, 29-27. Each team survived two set points before the Boilermakers closed out the match with back-to-back kills by Caitlyn Newton.
Michigan (19-9, 12-6 Big Ten) and Purdue will get another chance to square off against one another Wednesday (Nov. 27), as the Wolverines and Boilermakers do battle in Cliff Keen Arena at 6:30Â p.m.
