ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Paige Jones tallied a new career high with 27 kills as the No. 22 University of Michigan volleyball team's comeback effort fell short Wednesday (Nov. 27) against No. 16 Purdue (24-26, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 18-20) at home at Cliff Keen Arena.
The loss dropped Michigan's record to 19-10 overall and 12-7 in Big Ten action.
The trio of Jones, senior Sydney Wetterstrom (12 kills) and freshman Jess Robinson (12) combined for 51 kills on the night to pace the Wolverines attack. Wetterstrom added 11 digs to secure a double-double in the contest. In just her second start of the season, senior Katarina Glavinic finished with a season-high five blocks and tied her season best with seven kills. U-M got an additional defensive contribution from fifth-year senior Cori Crocker and her six blocks.
Michigan fell behind two sets to none but came back to even it at two sets apiece before falling 20-18 in a thrilling fifth set. The back-and-forth fifth set featured 12 lead changes and was tied 12 times. Neither team led by more than three points in the finale.
The Wolverines could not persevere past a furious Purdue rally in the first set, losing 26-24 after leading by seven points at 15-8 early on, and they dug their hole further by dropping set two, 25-17.
Staring at a 0-2 deficit, Michigan fought back to grab the third set and make it a 2-1 match. The Wolverines claimed the set 25-20. U-M shut down four Purdue attacks as part of a solid performance by the front row and capitalized on 10 Purdue attacking errors on the way to victory.
Michigan continued its comeback by winning the fourth set, 25-20, to bring the match level at two sets apiece. The Wolverines took the lead for good at 9-8 in a set that showcased four lead changes before the Maize and Blue took over the lead. Michigan also supplemented its offense with three aces in the set.
Michigan will be back in action on Friday (Nov. 29), when it will take on Indiana at 7 p.m. The Wolverines will have a post-match celebration to honor the careers of their seven seniors: Ellie Brooks, Crocker, Glavinic, Kyleigh Hamacher, Katerina Rocafort, MacKenzi Welsh and Wetterstrom.
