ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team dropped its regular-season finale on Sunday (Nov. 3), falling to No. 9 Iowa, 1-0, in front of 354 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. The Hawkeyes clinched a share of the Big Ten Conference regular-season title with their win and snapped U-M's seven-game home winning streak.
Iowa scored the game's lone goal early in the second quarter, at the 18:00 mark, off its first and only penalty-corner opportunity of the contest. Lokke Stribos converted on the direct shot, deflecting it off a Wolverine defender's stick and high into the cage.
After play was mostly confined to the midfield through the first half, Michigan dialed up the pressure in the second, outshooting the Hawkeyes, 7-1, in the half and outcornering them, 3-0. The Wolverines' best scoring chance came early in the third quarter when senior Meg Dowthwaite put back-to-back shots on goal from the right side of the circle and junior Kayla Reed missed just wide on a second rebound attempt.
Michigan held a two-player advantage over the final couple minutes of play after Iowa drew a late yellow card and with sophomore goalkeeper Anna Spieker pulled for an extra attacker. U-M drew a penalty corner in the final minute of regulation, but junior Halle O'Neill's shot was blocked and cleared.
In all, Michigan outshot the Hawkeyes, 9-3, and outcornered them, 4-1. Spieker earned one save -- in the third quarter -- while Iowa goalkeeper Leslie Speight stopped all six U-M shots on goal.
The Wolverines will take on host Penn State in a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal contest on Thursday (Nov. 7) at 11 a.m. at the PSU Field Hockey Complex in State College, Pennsylvania.
