MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team went 2-for-3 on the power play thanks to goals from freshman Cam York and senior Will Lockwood, but it was not enough as No. 19-ranked Wisconsin rallied to score three unanswered to defeat the Wolverines, 3-2, on Saturday night (Nov. 30) at the Kohl Center.
Michigan converted on its first two power-play chances to take a 2-0 lead at 7:14 of the second period. Wisconsin added two goals in the final 10 minutes of the second to draw even before the game winner in the third period.
Jake Slaker and sophomore Nick Blankenburg recorded their first multiple-point games of the season in the 150th meeting between Michigan and Wisconsin. Slaker now has 12 points (six goals, six assists) in his 14 games played against Wisconsin.
York put Michigan on the board at 5:13 of the first period as the Wolverines capitalized on a Dylan Holloway hooking call. Positioned along the right wall, Slaker played catch with Blankenburg at the right point before Slaker found a seam to feed York cross-ice, and he one-timed the puck over the blocker of Daniel Lebedeff.
Captain Lockwood redirected in the the Wolverines' second goal of the game, his third tally of the season from the doorstep. It was Slaker and Blakenburg again earning the assists at 7:14 of the second.
Less than five minutes later, Wisconsin finally broke through as it caught Michigan in the midst of a line change. Linus Weissbach fed Holloway in the right circle and he put it past goaltender Strauss Mann.
Wyatt Kalynuk evened the game at 18:05 when he weaved his way through the zone and finished glove side on Mann.
It was an odd bounce that gave the Badgers the game-winner when K'Andre Miller threw the puck into the slot for a teammate and instead it glanced off the skate of a Wolverine defender and across the goal line at 13:19 of the third.
Michigan had a chance to tie it up with its third power play coming just two minutes later. The Wolverines battled with seven total shots, three on frame, three blocked and one wide, but they could not find the equalizer.
The Maize and Blue tried again, this time with Mann pulled for the extra skater, and appeared to have the game-tying goal, but video review concluded the puck never completely crossed the goal line.
Mann finished with 28 saves, while Lebedeff stopped 27 for the Badgers.
Michigan and Wisconsin will battle it out again Sunday (Dec. 1) at the Kohl Center. Game time is set for 4 p.m. CST, and the contest will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
