Jones Leads Wolverines Past Spartans in Four Sets

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Paige Jones tied a career-high with 26 kills and registered a double-double thanks to 14 digs to help lead the University of Michigan volleyball team to a 3-1 victory (25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 25-16) over Michigan State on Wednesday night (Nov. 6) at Crisler Center.
The conference win improved Michigan's record to 16-7 overall and 9-4 in Big Ten play.
For Jones, the double-double marks her third consecutive game with double-digit kills and digs, and is the seventh-straight game with 10 kills of more. Senior Sydney Wetterstrom and junior Natalie Smith had 16 digs to lead the Wolverines, while Jones added 14, and senior MacKenzi Welsh had 11 to go along with 53 assists. Freshman May Pertofsky was the only other Michigan player to reach double-digit kills, collecting 10 to help out offensively.
The Wolverines took control of the match early, grabbing the lead at 5-4 in the first set and holding it the rest of the way to win, 25-19. Michigan opened up its largest lead of the stanza -- six points -- to finish off the set, collecting 15 kills along the way.
Michigan carried momentum from its set-one win by securing a 25-21 victory in set number two. Michigan opened up as much as a seven-point lead at 24-17 before closing out the set, totaling 16 kills in the process.
Michigan's chance at a sweep came to an end when Michigan State took the third set, 25-22. The Wolverines dropped a back-and-forth battle that featured four lead changes and 11 ties. Neither team had a lead of more than three points along the way.
Michigan responded in the fourth set to claim the match 25-16 victory in the stanza. Jones had 11 of her 26 kills in the decisive fourth set.
Michigan will be back in action on Sunday (Nov. 9)Â when they take on No. 21-ranked Illinois at 7 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
