Wolverines to Host Creighton in Gavitt Tipoff Games Matchup at Crisler

The University of Michigan men's basketball team hosts its Gavitt Tipoff Game matchup with Creighton on Tuesday (Nov. 12) at Crisler Center. The second game of the eight-game series will be aired on FS1 at 6:31 p.m. with Tim Brando and Bill Raftery as the broadcast crew.
What Are the Gavitt Tipoff Games?
• Started in 2015, the Gavitt Tipoff Games is an eight-game challenge series between the Big Ten and Big East. The event just over midway through an eight year deal (2015-22) between the two leagues.
• The series is named in honor of the late Dave Gavitt, former coach and athletic director at Providence and one of the founders of the Big East Conference, where he served as the commissioner for 11 years (1979-90).
• After the first three series matchups ended in 4-4 ties, the Big Ten used a 5-3 record to win the series in 2018.
• Michigan has appeared twice in Gavitt Tipoff Games. First, U-M suffered an 86-70 loss to Xavier at Crisler Center on Nov. 20, 2015. The second was a rematch of the 2018 national title game at Villanova, where the Wolverines claimed a 73-46 road win at Finneran Pavilion on Nov. 14, 2018.

A Look at the Creighton Bluejays
• Creighton opened the season with an 81-55 victory over Kennesaw State on Nov. 5 in Omaha, Nebraska. Ty-Shon Alexander led the Bluejays with 19 points, while Marcus Zegarowski added 18 points.
• The Bluejays were picked to finish seventh in the Big East preseason poll. Creighton is entering its seventh season in the Big East after being a longtime member of the Missouri Valley Conference.
• Alexander was named to the Preseason Top 50 watch list for the John R. Wooden Award, given annually to the most outstanding college basketball player. He is also on the watch list for the Jerry West Award, presented to the nation's top shooting guard.
• Creighton is coming off a 20-15 campaign a season ago; the Bluejays went 9-9 in Big East play and reached the quarterfinals of the NIT before falling to TCU.
• Greg McDermott is in his 10th season as the head coach at Creighton, leading the program to five NCAA Tournament appearances. McDermott joined the Bluejays following four seasons as the head coach at Iowa State (2006-10).
The Series With the Bluejays
• Michigan holds a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series against Creighton.
• In the first meeting (Dec. 3, 1962), U-M claimed an 81-62 victory against 19th ranked Creighton at Yost Arena in Ann Arbor.
• The second meeting went to overtime in the first round of the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Florida. Led by Manny Harris' 20 points and a 16-point, 10-rebound effort from DeShawn Sims, the Wolverines defeated the Bluejays, 83-76, at Disney's Milkhouse.
These Are Just Some Cool Facts
• Zavier Simpson has not missed a game in four seasons -- a streak of 117 straight.
• Jon Teske has not missed a game in three seasons -- a streak of 80 straight and is expected to play in his 100th career game against Creighton.
• Eli Brooks has not missed a game in his last 39 games. In fact he played in alll 37 game a year ago off the bench.
• Simpson has vaulted himself up U-M's all-time leaders becoming the 10th Wolverine to surpass 400 career assists. He ranks seventh all-time with 437 career assists.
• Teske leads U-M with 11 double-doubles.
• With his 24 points against Appalachian State, Brooks posted his first career double-figure scoring game as well as his first 20-plus point game.
Missing Piece
• Michigan will be without the services of freshman guard Franz Wagner after he fractured his right wrist (shooting hand) in practice on Oct. 20th. Preliminary outlooks were a 4-6 week absence with his return hopeful by the Battle 4 Atlantis over Thanksgiving.
