The University of Michigan ice hockey team (6-10-2, 2-7-1-0 B1G) returns after a three-week break to compete at the 55th annual Great Lakes Invitational at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. The Wolverines will face Ferris State on Monday (Dec. 30) at 4 p.m. and will take on either Michigan State or Michigan Tech on Tuesday (Dec. 31).
The GLI
This year marks the 55th GLI, and the field will be rounded out by Ferris State. This will be FSU's second appearance in the tournament as an invitee after finishing in fourth place in 2014. Michigan, appearing for the 50th time, has taken home the MacInnes Trophy a record 17 times while compiling an overall record of 56-34-3 (.618). Last season, the Wolverines tied the host, Michigan Tech, 2-2 before falling in a shootout that put the Huskies in the title game. The next day, Michigan and Michigan State skated to a 2-2 tie in the consolation matchup. Michigan's Luke Morgan was named to the all-tournament team.
Scouting Ferris State
The Bulldogs, a familiar foe for the Wolverines from years in the CCHA, enter the holidays with a record of 6-9-2. In the WCHA, their record of 4-6-2 is good for seventh place. The team's top two scorers come from the back end, with freshman Jake Willets (2-13-15) and senior Nate Kallen (5-7-12) leading the way. Forward Marshall Moise leads the team in goals (7-4-11), while Coale Norris (5-2-7) is a familiar face for Wolverine fans because his brother, Josh, played for U-M from 2017-19. Three goaltenders have seen time in net this season for Bob Daniels' squad, but senior Austin Shaw leads the way with a 3-2-1 record, a 2.38 goals-against average, and a .909 save percentage.
Wolverine Bites
• Michigan is 6-10-2 on the season and, when we last left off on Dec. 6-7, split a series with No. 6 Penn State.
• For the GLI the Wolverines will be without Johnny Beecher and Cam York, who are playing for the U.S. in the World Junior Championship. The pair sit atop the scoring column for the team with nine points apiece.
• Senior Jake Slaker is the top scorer for the Wolverines at the GLI with eight points, while senior Will Lockwood, senior Nick Pastujov and sophomore Garrett Van Wyhe each add seven points.
• Sophomore Strauss Mann has started in all but one game in goal this season and has a .931 save percentage and a 2.06 GAA. He was named one of the B1G Stars of the Week after his performance against the Nittany Lions.
• Senior defenseman Luke Martin leads the Wolverines with 40 blocked shots. A 2017 second-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes, Martin has a career total of 223 blocks in the maize and blue.
• New York Islanders draft pick Nick Pastujov leads the Wolverines in the faceoff circle, winning 58.2 percent of faceoffs. The elder Pastujov has won 145 draws back to his team out of 249 chances.
• Michigan is averaging 32.44 shots on goal per game, tied for ninth-most in the nation with B1G foe Wisconsin. The team's 584 total shots on goal also have them in a tie with UW, for seventh-most nationwide.
