Quad Meet
• Saturday's meet marks the sixth straight year that Michigan has hosted EMU in its exhibition meet at Crisler Center and second straight year hosting CMU and WMU in a quad meet.
• Each team will be allowed six competitors on each event with up to two exhibition routines
• Michigan will start on vault, Eastern Michigan on uneven bars, Central Michigan on balance beam and Western Michigan on floor exercise
• Michigan won the quad meet last season with a score of 195.125. It was a sign of things to come for Natalie Wojcik as the freshman won the all-around (39.225), floor exercise (9.875) and uneven bars (9.875). Classmate Abby Brenner won vault with a 9.875 and Lexi Funk won balance beam with a 9.725.
Returners
• Michigan returns 11 gymnasts from the 2019 team that made it to the NCAA semifinal. The team lost two seniors, Olivia Karas and Emma McLean, which accounted for six lineup spots.
• Among the returners are Wojcik, the 2019 balance beam NCAA champion, as well as 2019 All-Americans Funk and Maddy Osman.
• The sophomore class provided a big boost to last year's team. As freshmen, all four were in the lineup on at least two events. Wojcik, Brenner, Maddie Mariani and Abby Heiskell all are expected to contribute a lot again this year.
Newcomers
• This year's freshman class started out with one signee last November and grew to a class of four. Gabby Wilson, the first signee, is a nine-time Junior Olympic national champion and two-time Region 5 Gymnast of the Year. Sierra Brooks graduated high school early to join the Wolverines and won four national titles a the 2019 J.O. Nationals. Those two are joined by Nicoletta Koulos and Abbie Gaies.
Captains
• Seniors Funk and Osman were chosen to lead the 2019-20 team after the 2019 team banquet in May.
Schedule
• Michigan will be at home for five regular-season meets in 2020.
• The 2020 season will start with Washington and Texas Woman's University. Washington's head coach Elise Ray won three individual national championships at Michigan from 2001-04.
• Another former Wolverine will return as a head coach on Feb. 28, as Lindsey (Bruck) Ayotte, a two-time All-American from 2004-08 will lead New Hampshire.
• Other home meets include Rutgers on Jan. 24, Ohio State on Feb. 9 and Ball State on March 13.
• Notable meets away from home include the Elevate the Stage meet in Toledo, Ohio, on Feb. 22, a road contest at 2019 NCAA Champion Oklahoma and Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio, on March 21.
Vault Breakdown
• The Wolverines ranked No. 6 nationally on vault last year. The team lost two of its top four averages, including two-time Big Ten vault champion McLean. The top returners are Wojcik (9.863) and Brenner (9.846). Junior Anne Maxim averaged 9.814 over the final 10 meets of the season. Three freshmen all scored at least a 9.900 on vault in Level 10, including Brooks (9.950), Wilson (9.925) and Koulos (9.900).
Uneven Bars Breakdown
• After ranking No. 10 on bars, Michigan lost only one routine as it heads into the 202 season. The team showed big potential with the second-highest bars score in program history at Elevate the Stage last year (49.625). Wojcik is the top returner with a 9.887 average, while Brenner (9.837), Heiskell (9.817) and Maxim (9.811) are all back. Brooks had a 9.875 in Level 10.
Balance Beam Breakdown
• Beam has been a strong event for the Wolverines the last two years with the team ranking No. 5 in 2018 and No. 6 in 2019. The group is led by the 2019 NCAA champion, Wojcik, who set a school record with a 9.917 average. Maggie O'Hara averaged a 9.808 before suffering a season-ending injury. Brooks scored a perfect 10 on beam in J.O. Nationals.
Floor Exercise Breakdown
• Traditionally a great event for Michigan, floor features four returners -- but two of the top three have departed. Wojcik was Big Ten champion on the event as a freshman and averaged 9.860. Brenner also was a mainstay in the lineup with a high of 9.900. Brooks, Koulos and Wilson all have career highs of 9.800 or better on the event as well.
