AUSTIN, Texas -- Junior Joel Harrison of the University of Michigan men's soccer team was named an Academic All-American (second team) by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) on Thursday (Dec. 5). He is the third Wolverine in the 20-year history of the program to receive Academic All-America honors, joining Matt Niemeyer (2004, first team) and Ivo Cerda (2017-18, first team).
To be eligible for initial selection, nominated student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average in his second year at the current institution and must have played in at least 50 percent of the team's games.
One of the team's three captains, Harrison (Langley, British Columbia, Canada) played in 19 matches (18 starts) this season on defense, helping lead the Wolverines to an 11-5-6 record and a third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. He played a big role in the team's defensive efforts this season, as Michigan set a program record for lowest goals-against average (0.78) and tied a program record for fewest goals conceded (18 in 22 matches). Harrison scored his first career goal in the team's opener on Aug. 30 against Florida Gulf Coast.
Harrison is enrolled in the College of Engineering, majoring in computer science engineering.
